Sheryl and ubonjoe.

The site is over (at least with the present rules and that which cannot even be discussed) if they are not here.

"She is also a very good moderator and not prone to victimise or over police individual posters."

ubononjoe also.

I guess i'll chime in again, as a newbie. What i like about this forum is the good information offered. As for people's political opinions, that is the sort of thing that ruins an information forum. Some may feel this is "not" an information forum but rather a platform for them to preach to the choir. Free speech and all that. No one really cares about your political views, or at least not on an expat forum where we just need advice on how to live in a foreign country. Grab your buddies and hit a local bar.. rant to your hearts content. Just don't expose the rest of us to whatever is pissing you off today.

Natural attrition?

Given the average age of posters here - 70+ ? - likelihood some have passed away, apart from the obvious age-related reason we've had two years of Covid impact.

Also aware of long-term expats who returned to their home countries at the beginning of Covid and did not return.

I think the repats might be a reason, along with the decline in sexpats.

We moved back to the US several years ago to follow our son, and while I'm still interested in Thai stuff, we have a house there I find myself less interested in commenting on things that I really have no interest in.

The age thing might also be a factor, these kind of forums had their day, but the younger folks don't really care for them and have moved to other platforms

free speech .     hahahhahahahahahahhahah     shhhhhhh   there is a always someone listening

For sure age is a factor as to who pays attention to most of the posts.

Why? What prevented you from rolling your eyes and scrolling on? The idea is that you be in charge of what you can read, not someone else who has their own set of biases nor an algorithm coded by persons with their own biases.

Added: Sometimes I see posts here I myself think are silly which have been upvoted multiple times. So, apparently, we don't all have the same tastes. Good.

You think/say what you believe, I'll do the same.

Different sites have different aims. I have found some news threads unreadable lately e.g. conspiracies about the Paul Pelosi attack, based on the notion of 'could be', or the fact that there is some trivial point that the police may not have explained yet.

You may prefer total freedom but I like having posts where there is something to debate - an idea, an event where the actual evidence may point to two different possible scenarios, not just lots of posts showing preconceived hatred of one party or another.

I don't like it because it is boring and there's nowhere the discussion can go if the opinion is based on hearsay or some remote possibility.

That may seem like shutting down free speech but maybe there are other sites where posters can wax lyrical about whatever they have read on some other obscure websites or what comes into their head.

You tip your hand there. Lots of credible reports questioning what exactly happened at the Pelosi residence. But we don't want you shut down for your obvious bias. Nor them.

Well, my friend, what to you is a debatable idea might be drivel to someone else. And vice versa.

Again, the point is neither you nor I nor anybody else should have veto powers over others right to express themselves.

Bottom line, this site is moderated. If you are not pleased with that, you are welcome to seek life elsewhere. No one makes you stay.

So impressed that after 20 posts (18 posts until this thread)  you have been appointed (by yourself) spokesperson for all the posters here, and have learned what all of them care about.

"No one really cares about your political views, or at least not on an expat forum where we just need advice on how to live in a foreign country."

Translation : "I personally don't care about your political views...

I personally just need advice on how to live in a foreign country.

Because I feel that way, the forum should become that."

But isn't that the way everyone feels to some degree, I need the forum to be X so unless it is that then it's wrong? What about the poor troll who spends his/her time baiting other posters, they think the forum should allow that behavior whilst others want to intelligent debate....where to draw the line?

I love this thread! It's a meta-thread. It's a thread about what threads should be and not be. All of us here are transcendental thread gurus.

Just won't let it go, will you.

Trying to control an open forum. stop it.

If memory serves, this month will be the 20th anniversary of this forum.

Everything does change Charlie as you say, bus companies, train companies, police forces, but not so much in America. In the fifties and probably before they had the LAPD, Greyhound and Trailways bus companies, Amtrak trains. Today they all still have the same names.

Exactly. A debate? Seeing a definition: A discussion in which reasons are advanced for and against some proposition or proposal

Should it be a debate then it should also heed a democratic principle of a debate somebody had expressed many years ago:

I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

However, who cares nowadays what is a "democratic principle"?

I think you meant "ads". but your experience is not universal. if it were then this website wouldn't exist.

Sorry you've confused me. Are there ads on this forum . Yes or no?

You have a right to your opinion. And I have a right to leave you 100% alone with it.

yes, there are ads. that's how the website owners pay the bills.

Me neither, but there again I'm on a desktop that's ad proof. I did try accessing the site on my smartphone, that experience was ad. city and lasted under two minutes.

For better of for worse, monetization by google is changing the way people write and speak. Look at youtube channels and you will see that popular channels have started to use replacement code words. Grape instead of r@pe. Corn instead of p0rn. SA or essay instead of sexual assault. There are many others.

This is not the past, this is the present. Without advertisers such as google this forum would not exist, so for us, and for many other content creators these words have to be substituted.

Voltaire or possibly a biographer of his giving the essence of what the man was about. Whatever, the most wonderful words ever written. Better than any legal blather about free speech.

I Totally agree with you!

Here is some background info.

The earliest instance of the quote occurs in Hall’s 1906 “The Friends of Voltaire,” a biography of the French writer and philosopher originally published under Hall’s pseudonym S.G. Tallentyre.

In the passage where the quote appears, Hall discusses Voltaire’s reaction to news that the government had condemned and burned fellow French philosopher Claude-Adrien Helvétius’ book. Voltaire, according to Hall, did not find the substance of Helvétius’ work particularly impressive but was still dismayed by French Parliament’s actions.

“‘I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it,’ was his attitude now,” wrote Hall.

IMO it is useful to post material grievances here as a warning and information for others.

If there is a brand that throws you under a bus when it comes to a warranty, or a defective product, wouldn't you want to know about it?

If there was a police checkpoint that had a reputation for extorting foreigners on the flimsiest of pretexts, I am damn sure I would like to hear about that too.
