Mercedes-Benz bursts into flames following collision with power pole in Chonburi

A Mercedes-Benz sedan driven by a Thai woman caught fire after crashing into a power pole last night, November 23rd.

 

Plu Ta Luang firefighters and rescuers rushed to snuff out a fire that was engulfing a red Mercedes-Benz sedan wreckage at the entrance of the Naphaphan Land Village on Sukhumvit Road inbound to Rayong province.

 

The village was situated in the Plu Ta Luang subdistrict of Sattahip, Chonburi.

Thats one of the facets of road safety here in Thailand. 

 

Road safety is not just about law enforcement, driving training and safety awareness, which of course are primary facets, but also about ‘road design’, how logical road layouts are, how clearly they are laid out, marked and sign posted.... But also ‘how safe’ the roads itself is with barriers, armco and as with this example, how close immovable objects such as power poles etc to the road itself....

 

There’s the ‘human factor’ which we can’t completely eradicate - thus, when the ‘human factor’ surfaces and there is a ’slip up’ a micro-sleep a distraction or moment of inattention a devotion from the ‘lane’ good, safe and well thought out planning and road design means there isn’t something ’solid’ to hit....  (in most cases)...  

 

In Thailand this aspect of safety is not even an after thought - hence, so many of these ‘power poles’ and 'light poles’ are impacted....

I have long advocated the avoidance of both power poles and trees. They just don't yield and make terrible obstructions.

Thais don't need to be drunk to drive badly. They can do that perfectly well unaided by alcohol. Just mix a wet road and high speed and they have all the ingredients they need. Often, they don't even need those. Just 'Me First' will do.

I suspect many other makes suffer the same design fault. I only tune into this forum to find out which power pole is on the move.
