Callmeishmael
I wonder how many of them were wearing seat belts and if that would have made a difference between living and dying?

theoldgit
"Investigators are working to ascertain how and why the accident occurred" Soi 94 is at the edge of a popular bar area in Hua Hin, maybe there's a link. "One of the deceased was a senior officer from Hua Hin Police Station" ???? I drive over that crossing frequently but I can’t remember if they have manually operated sliding gates, at 04.00, or automatic gates, either way it shouldn’t have happened.

KhunLA
'how & why' ... ???? hmm ... on 2nd thought, that is a gated crossing, and doesn't seem to have a whole lot of shoulder to squeeze around. Although there is a stop sign there, and one would think, while stopped, hey, why not 'look & listen' while there. ukrules
Having watched the video with the car sitting there waiting at first, they appear to have waited until about 2, perhaps 3 seconds before the train with full lights turned on was very near before driving in front of it. Did the driver look at all? Because if they did look then this wasn't an accident.

Looking at the video it appears that the crossing has half or a little more barriers. It also looks like the car driver got bored with waiting and decided to drive around the barrier without anybody getting out of the car to check if there was a train coming. I feel more sorry for the train driver as there is no way he could have stopped in time. 3 1

It would be interesting to see just how many trains go along that line, over that crossing, per day. Not that many I would have thought. Also Bill, if the boozers had closed a 2am as they should have..........unless they were workers starting an early shift. Popular Post spidermike007
This was not an accident. He was stopped at the railway gate. He decided to try to go around the gate at the last minute, and clearly did not look both ways, nor pay attention to the thunderously loud noise of an oncoming train. This is simply the behavior of a numskull, who devastated the lives of others by committing an act of stunning idiocy. Three are dead. Unbelievable hubris, and a man who was in a hurry to go to his grave and take others along with him. ThailandRyan
It literally comes down to one being impatient. We have around 8 trains a day goin up and down the rail line here in the Khao Tao Area. The one at 7 am today made sure they blasted the horn as they approached the crossing here which is being worked on for an overpass. Just had another go through as I write this post. Just another driver who believes a red light doesn't apply to them.

Two of the dead thrown from car - looks like not. Belts would have certainly boosted their chances - most who get thrown out of a car in an accident die. And getting thrown out is a major sign of being beltless.
300sd
No excuse running flashing red lights at a controlled crossing. Although the units pulling these trains mostly do not have working whistles, or they are barely audible.

I do not think high speed trains here would be feasible, or realistic without elevated platforms. So, in reality they would likely be alot safer than the antique trains currently in use.
