At least 50 Thai gamblers and employees of a Cambodian casino in the Poipet border town were reported to be trapped inside after the casino caught fire late Wednesday night. A number of people, mostly Thais, were injured and were taken to the Thai border town of Aranyaprathet, Sa Kaeo Province, for treatment.

It is not known whether or how many people have died in the fire, as some witnesses claim that they saw some people jumping from the 5th floor of the building, which is located at about 20 metres from the border. About 50 people were seen on the roof.

Five fire trucks and about 10 rescue vehicles and ambulances rushed to the scene to help extinguish the fire and help victims.

A THAI helicopter flew to rescue Thais stuck on the rooftop of a blazing luxury Cambodian hotel and casino in Poipet, just opposite Rong Kluea market in Aranyaprathet subdistrict, Sa Kaeo province, with the 17-storey building on the verge of collapsing, Matichon newspaper said this morning (Dec. 29).

Staff of Grand Diamond City Hotel and Casino said the fire started in the ground floor kitchen and then quickly spread to the other parts of the complex because Poipet only has one firetruck and the Cambodian firemen were unable to control the blaze.

As the fire started spreading through the structure, with the first three floors being a casino and upper floors a luxury hotel with over a hundred rooms, the Thai side offered to help extinguish it but Cambodian immigration officials refused entry.

Isn't gambling at a casino a no-no for Buddhists?

Or were they in Poipet for the majestic scenery and friendly atmosphere?

Many things are a NO-NO to Buddhists and they still do them on daily basis anyway, this why Thailand is a country that many like to stay in...

Hardly, I have seen senior monks in Bangkok betting on Muay Thai bouts taking the cash out of those white donation envelopes!

don't believe all you read from these nonsense newspapers, from my understanding the Thai fire-fighters were allowed in once it became understood that it was serious, and assistance was needed.

It was in the OP.

I too have since seen reports about assistance from Thailand, which should be a given. I have seen elsewhere (unconfirmed) that this place is Thai owned.

So, there was a delay allowing Thai firefighters in? Still not a very bright decision.

Should burn them all. They cause a lot of misery amongst the local cross border Thai population. Even some Farang husbands see their lives sadly affected. Thai immigration facilitated the commuting  across the border, can't see why. Must be hidden under the furniture.

Maybe this is because of who owns the place?

Former government member during the Thaksin era.

Which begs the question how come the Thais realised the seriousness of the fire thus offering their assistance, before the Cambodians who were directly on the scene?

BS - From today's Khmer media (29/12/22):-

About 300 joint police forces and 11 fire trucks were operating at the scene, the commissioner said. However, due to the high and narrow location, the fire spread throughout the location, making the firefighting operation difficult.

He has sent helicopters and commandos to the scene to evacuate staff from the roof.
