I live in Pattaya and have not gone to WS for 5 years.  Not the cost, just burnout and lack of interest in the particular venues.  Gogos and discos don't interest me.

 

I do visit Soi 6 and other parts of town (not soi Buakhao/ Treetown) for fun and female company.  No problem with Beach Road met some nice ladies there over the years and the Darkside also has some good spots.

Never. And before I pay a lady drink I go to 7/11 and buy beer and talk to Siri or Bixby in my case. Always friendly, knows a lot and never asked me for money. Great conversations ????.

A bit surprised that the OP has not yet drawn the Claude Rains/Capt Renault "shocked, shocked" line from Casablanca.

 

As another poster noted, there are a few hundred thousand non-Pattaya square kms where an expat could settle, thereby avoiding the nastiness of Walking Street and FL-ridden Beach Road.

 

The OP spoke of Patts having all the things one needs to live comfortably, which I assume means grocery stories, dept stores and good communications. Perhaps he is unaware, but the reason those services are so easy to find in Patts is BECAUSE of what Walking Street, Beach Road, Soi Buakhow, Soi 6, LK Metro, etc. offer. Absent that in Pattaya's past, Pattaya would likely be a sleepy fishing village lacking a Terminal 21, Central Festival, multiple Big Cs, etc.

A lot of people just go to the easiest locations because it’s easy to find housing, food, etc there, also lots of English spoken. For those who don’t like moving around or are older they just settle in, even if it’s not ideal.

 

So Chiangmai, Phuket, Bangkok, Pattaya.

Pattaya's nefarious origins date back to the Vietnam war R&R days and the US AFB at U-Tapao.

I've been in Pattaya for 1,387 years and not once saw a hooker.

 

I have to admit I came to Pattaya for intellectual conversations, meeting fellow rocket scientists, super rich tourists, and for the museums and plays off-Broadway after enjoying a nice Kansas City steak with a 1,000 dollar bottle of wine!!!!  

I have been in Pattaya for conferences and meetings. Did you know that Pattaya is one of the most popular  locations in Thailand for such events? Not everyone goes there for boom boom.

If Hua Hin had easier access, it would be a close competitor to Pattaya. Not everyone goes to Pattaya to engage in sex trade or bar district.

So why not Hua Hin? It has hospitals and mostly everything Pattaya has without the sex scene. It’ also roughly the same distance from bkk. Does a hour or two make a difference or is it just an excuse you use. It’s just an excuse. Your in Pattaya for the sex scene, not a conference room, the beach, temple or grocery store.

I was comparing from 10-20 years though , sex tourism to Thailand has been in decline for the last 10-15 years , since about the same time that you could get free uncensored porn on the internet and travelling all the way to Thailand just to have sex lost lost its appeal to many

That's exactly what the Chinese tour groups used to do, walking up and down Walking Street in the early evening, following the guy with the flag (in order not to, accidentally, stumble into a bar?)...

 

As they probably didn't even buy a bottle of water from the convenience stores, there was no need for any place else to open.

 

As for the OP, 9 p.m. these days is quite early to expect a busy bar, which is, IMHO, surprising, considering the early closing hours now.

For some Pattaya is the definition of boring, bars, sex workers, noise, more bars, awful music, bad city planning, dirty sea and more bars. It was boring when I first went in 1994, went again in 96 thought I would give it a week, left after one night.

One thing that’s strange about Pattaya is it equates fun with loud.

I never got that, anywhere really, except for my teenage years when I went to rock concerts, but even then it was about the music, not volume. The yelling and loud music does not make things more enjoyable for me, but I guess some people like it.

the bars are open air, there's a certain vibe there, some people actually enjoy drinking and talking with the girls.

its not just the sex.
