Covid cases drop another 30% with only 4% of Chinese arrivals testing positive

The Covid-19 situation in Thailand is showing a steady improvement, with a decline of 30% in hospital admissions and fatalities. According to the Department of Disease Control, the average number of hospital admissions and deaths fell to 90 and six respectively between 15th January and 21st January.

 

Dr. Tares Krassanairawiwong, the Director-General of the DDC, stated that 627 Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospitals last week, with an average of 90 cases per day. Of these cases, 277 were suffering from lung infections, with 179 requiring ventilators.

 

Over the past week, the death toll has decreased to 44, which represents an average of six cases a day, and a fall of 32.3% compared to the previous week. This year, there have been 2,593 hospital admissions and 167 deaths.

 

In regards to foreign tourists, eight were found to have been infected between 8th January and 21st January, with only one being admitted to hospital. The eight cases consist of three Chinese tourists and one each from Cambodia, Japan, Myanmar, South Korea, and the UK.

 

The Medical Sciences Department has found that the majority of infections in Thailand are the Omicron BA.2.75 sub-variant.

 

PCR tests carried out on passengers departing Thailand for countries requiring such tests have found between 300 and 400 cases, including Thais and other nationalities, with only 10 cases being Chinese nationals, accounting for 4% of all Chinese arrivals.

 

Despite the improvement in the Covid-19 situation, Dr. Tares has advised the Thai people to not let their guard down and to continue to wear masks in crowded places, frequently clean their hands with sanitising gel, and take rapid antigen tests if they develop Covid-related symptoms.

Though promising Thailand , Let’s talk numbers.

So 30% Decline out of 100% ? So the infection rate is at 70% ? ???? Secondly Chinese tourist infection rate 4% ? Out of how many total Chinese tourists ? These are important questions so throwing unsubstantiated precentages and numbers out here with no substance is ABSOLUTE BUNK !!

So it seems time to end the mask wearing.. announce it....and who has thought that Chinese tourists would be more infected?? same as during the pandameic.. Numbers are unreliable...The only thing that I believe is that Covid cases are less

COVID peaked weeks ago there and is definitely a non-issue now.  

We will have to live with it now, and that's that.  I don't give a toss about it now.

 Can’t believe this. Couple weeks ago they were testing 50%+ off of flights from PRC. I suppose in the interim most have passed it on and are no longer infected. ????

I was in Lotus'sssss this week and saw several Thais with masks below their chin, and one with it hanging off one ear. They don't use them as 'needed' but just can't give them up. It's like a security blanket to them.

It's still quite apparent in more crowded public venues - 

At least 80% maskers.

 

Though....it is dwindling at tad from a few months ago and certainly from several months ago.

 

Amused and baffled when I observe face coverings outdoors when no one is around.....in one's vehicle alone....

Arrival of China tourists non-issue. Despite the rassist fear-mongering  exactly as predicted. They tested positive but were they contagious? The most important strategy at the national level at this time  re: covid-19 is just stop talking about it. Instead continue common sense public health measures like any other endemic disease that is never going away.

It has nothing to do with perception of risk and much about herd mentality. They will stop when they see a critical mass of others stopping. That critical mass might be higher than other countries, such as India, where masks have largely been abandoned, but where society is more fissiparous.

Am I missing something, if they are COVID positive why wouldn't they be contagious ?

I think the evidence is now fairly clear 3 years into COVID and 2 years into vaccines that if you have COVID and are either vaccinated or unvaccinated, you will be contagious...

Thailand  went from locking people in rooms for 14 days even with 4 negative tests only based on fear. Then to 10 days after a positive test/symptoms start allowing them to come to work, to 5 days,  and so on ....

 

With exteme sensitivity of PCR tests people have tested "positive" for weeks after they are no longer considered contagious. There is also something with the cycle threshold different countries/labs used for testing as well as the sampling method. Nasal versus nasophangeal and oropharangeal.

 

China even forced anal swabs on visitors. Supposedly very effective. There were some complaints.
