No ED Visa for over 50s

Featured Replies

Went to a language school in Phuket today and was told that my missus at 36 could have an ED visa but me at age 49 (50 in June) could not.
They said it was new rules.

That was a bit of a surprise.

An ed-visa you can get without having to grease palms.  Pushing you to get a retirement visa is making an agent appear attractive.

The school said they are pushing over 50s to getting an O-A / O-X instead.  I can't figure out why.

  • Can you hear that sound?  That's that sound of Mexico beckoning.

The lady down the road from me uses an agent and has a one year visa. Might have a chat with her.
The 'this is your last visa waiver" convo with the IO at Phuket a few days ago was odd. Posted about it on a separate thread.

So you actually plan to study the Thai Language?

Yes. That's the plan.
I'll check some more schools and see if I get the same response.

If you can wing the financials (or use an agent) you're really much better off with an O or O-A visa and extensions.

Thanks. I'll explore it a bit more.

When does your current permission of stay expire.

If you can obtain another border bounce visa exempt entry prior to march 31 you could use an agent to obtain non O retirement and subsequent extension when you turn 50.

Does not prevent you from studying Thai only prevents you from working.

Can you truly go to school on a retirement Visa? What happens when your asked to teach the class with what knowledge you have gained?

My Phuket school said the same thing you are saying.  (For now) No more ed visas in Phuket for anyone under 50 and no ed visas for Chinese citizens regardless of their age.  Immigration is doing this.  I think it is due to the Tuhao situation which has become a big political football.

You may get a bigger surprise if the family of your username has a lawyer contact you.  It is illegal to use celebrity names online as your username here or elsewhere. 5555

Read my post again.

30 day extension will not get you till when you turn 50.

Also agent would need time to obtain non O retirement if you went for that option.

Get a non-o retirement, then you can study Thai to your heart's content without visa worries.

That would be great. I'll have a chat with an agent maybe.

Apologies.  I have written wrong info. Should say no more ed visas for 50 or over.

The catch is you really need to be 50 years old first before you can do that.
