The Election Commission is redrawing election constituency maps in eight provinces after the Constitutional Court ruled that non-Thai citizens must be excluded from the Thai population when calculating the number of constituency MPs for each respective province.

The Court resolved unanimously today (Friday) that the word “citizens” does not include people who do not have Thai nationality and, therefore, they should not be included in the Thai population, as reported in the census of the Central Domicile Registration Office, in the calculation of the number of constituency MP for each province.

The court’s ruling is not retroactive, which means that the calculation of the number of constituency MPs in previous elections will not be affected.

As it should be. Non Thais obtain nothing truly of value from this country since the majority of us are just here on long stay visas as far as the government is concerned.

Yet, ignore the monetary contributions that is continuously pumped into the local economy.

Not ignoring what we pump into the economy. Do you understand that constituents are who the elected technically work for to enhance there communities and help them obtain the benefits needed. Do you gain any benefits from this government directky for yourself? If your married to a Thai you might get something out of it like the travel subsidy while others who are just expats with no ties to a Thai family obtain nothing. So again tell me why just because a province has X number of expats living there the province needs more MP's.....

Makes perfect sense.

Tax paying...? All Thai nationals pay tax?p

as for voting rights, it is different everywhere. But, it does remind me of the three fifths compromise and re-districting going on in the US now.I

An MP represents Thai natonals, in a place that would have a small Thai population in relation to a foreign population.

For example, areas in Bangkok that have a relatively large foreign population to Thai population ratio. Money allocated without taking this into account effectively mpoverishes the area. By area, the MP would have a larger constituency compared to an area that has few foreigners. I understand the differences between representation and census, but the 2 are interdependent.
