Popular Post snoop1130
PHOTO: Thai PBS World As Songkran kicks off, the police are busy cracking down on dangerous or reckless driving behaviour, with hundreds of probation orders handed out already. According to a Coconuts report, over 300 offenders have received the court-mandated orders so far. Weerakit Hanpariphan, chief of the Probation Department, says most offences (77%) involve drink driving. Others include driving under the influence of other substances, reckless driving, and speeding. Songkran, or Thai New Year, is a time when dangerous driving and road traffic accidents tend to run high. The Probation Department says the provinces with the highest number of drink driving incidents are Bangkok, with 37, the neighbouring province of Nonthaburi, with 32, and Chiang Rai in the north, with 26. Popular Post SoilSpoil
100,000 baht fines might work better. No money, no problem. Police will kindly impound your car, so that the hungover driver has more time to fork up the money. Drunk driving is a crime, nothing less, so indeed 'what the fudge'. 9

Popular Post Tengu
It seems to me that Thailand has the perfect built in remedy to people driving while under the influence (DWI) of anything, alcohol or ANY drug that inhibits their ability whether illegal, legal, prescribed, homegrown. All that has to be done is to pass a law that a first offense is punished with a BT1000 fine and ALL convicted of DWI to have their Names, photos and neighborhoods of residence published publicly. A similar punishment for anyone accepting any bribe to circumvent the arrest, prosecution or conviction of said DWI. As important as "Face" is in Thailand that public loss of face will make everyone think twice before driving somewhere after drinking. This wouldn't work in the USA or in much of the west where people would be worried that you wouldn't spell their name correctly. Here no one seems to care what crime you commit. Lie, steal, commit adultery, there is no shame, there hasn't been for decades and it just gets worse. 4
Popular Post smedly
not to worry, after songcran everyone can continue to drink and drive without the risk of ................... probation whatever the ##### that means they just can't help themselves - drinking and driving is ok just not this week, the stupidy is shocking - enforce the law 365 days a year - how ###ing hard is that my theory is that RTP and officials drive drunk so they are the biggest offenders - the carnage will continue while the very people that are tasked to enforce the law are drunk driving themselves ........... 3rd world and will never change 1

Most of those caught and punished are probably wondering why, when they get away with the same behaviour during the rest of the year.

There is something similar to that in China, a huge electronic sign that posts your name and traffic offense for all to see. In big red letters. 1

prakhonchai nick
@IvorBiggun posted this earlier this year Probation in Thailand is used when the jails are full and is used for minor crimes/criminals. Instead of locking people up they are allowed to remain free but have to report regularly to their nearest police station. So drunk driving is just a minor crime. AMAZING THAILAND!!!!!!!!
