Woman sparks outrage by posing on the train tracks at Auschwitz

Featured Replies

In the image, taken and shared by Maria Murphy, the anonymous woman is shown sitting on the railway tracks that transported some 1.1 million people (including 1 million Jews) to their deaths at the camp.

She is in a casual pose, leaning back and smiling widely, as she holds her hair off her face with one of her hands.

In the caption accompanying the image, which was posted on April 15, Maria wrote: 'Today I had one of the most harrowing experiences of my life.

Obviously she shouldn't have done that. But it seems many people all over the world visit places which are related to atrocities and take pictures.   The Death Railway in Kanchanaburi,

Totally inappropriate what a shallow feckless ignorant broad her family must be ashamed

Unfortunately, I doubt that she is the first - or will be the last - person to behave in this manner.

How anyone can see this location as a social media photo opportunity is beyond me.

Someone needs to give her head a shake.

I am sure she will take selfies all night long.

The lengths some people will go to to get a like.

Obviously she shouldn't have done that.

But it seems many people all over the world visit places which are related to atrocities and take pictures.

The Death Railway in Kanchanaburi, Thailand is just one example.

I've visited both camps, an experience I'll never forget.

This would be one of the worst places in the world to see, but everyone needs to see it. Let's hope the sane people in this world will never let this happen again.

The basics will be fine, a list showing the other persecuted groups and the number of deaths.

There is quite a lot on info in these two links

I found those links by doing a google search  , you can also do a google search if the info you require isn't in my links

And that is likely not much of an indication of her intelligence, but rather her understanding of how to manipulate a social media platform, and the silly number of people who use them.

PT Barnum would of been a billionaire if he'd lived in these times.

The "Look At ME" generation strikes again.   Not sure which is worse, the idiot who poses for such a picture or the legion of idiots who encourage it by their clicks/likes/hearts/messages.

You can see the same in Thailand at various sacred sites. I remember seeing a group of Korean teenagers doing one of those 'group jump' style pictures in front of Wat Chedi Luang in Chiang Mai. The guard gave them a good shout and they at least had the grace to slink away in shame.

Dumb lady but I suggest not giving her any more attention than she's already getting.

You can find a general answer to your questionably sincere query at this link at this header.

Not sure if everyone needs to visit death camps but I think everyone should be educated about the holocaust in schools.

There is tons of evidence about it including film records and vile holocaust deniers need to be aggressively rebutted.

Even more so going forward as the last of the survivors will soon to be gone to give live accounts.

I did visit Dachau at age 15 and it was very moving.

Nothing wrong with taking photos per sec but it depends on the context.

It's one thing to take a photo of a picturesque setting e.g. the photo you posted or as a poignant reminder of what happened at a location, quite another to strike a pose and post the photo on social media in order to get personal reward ('likes' or financial reward).

This woman's photo falls into the latter category.

I can think of another circus huckster who became a billionaire.
