Bit of proof reading would not go amiss to change foreigner welcomes to foreigners welcome

The heat has softened the adhesive and the letter "s" has just slid down the glass a bit!   Or perhaps it's just an indication of what the shop has in store for non-Thai customers...foreigner welcomes.

If you've got another minute, let the pharmacist know you've highlighted his business in the English language media.

You think it's a good idea to let him know the sort of people that he's highlighted it to, i.e. the Thai-bashers. p1ss-takers and grammar-checkers?!  So far, the majority of responses to the OP have been negative.

Yeah, the way the message reads now suggests they're advertising some kind of service.

I'm often amazed at the number of business signs - some of which must have set the proprietor back more than a few ducats - I see around Bangkok with similar grammatical errors, misused colloquialisms, etc. You'd think some of these folks would want to consult with a native English speaker before placing their orders.

But, is every native speaker capable of English (any language) for signage? NO.

Are you surprised?

The pharmacist speaks English quite well. I was surprised he’d approved it. Reminds me of my previous job where a new facility was purpose-built to impress foreign customers, English writing everywhere on the walls (mission statements, goals etc) and riddled with errors. The manager in charge looked at me, bursting with pride “what do you think na?”, expecting my approval. “You got a minute?”, I replied.

If I entered a pharmacy and the pharmacist did not speak English, I would do an about turn and walk out. Same goes for a doctor, dentist or any other medical person.

It's charming the way it is. Gawd help us if Thailand becomes like Singapore, or worse...England! ????

What could possibly be worse than England? Its on a very slippery slope on its way to hell in a hand cart. If the Torys lose the next election the covers will be off the tubes and Starmer and co will be shovelling for all they are worth.

I have to assume you are not an English Teacher?

You assume correctly, I am a simple Lancashire Lad who learned A Level English at a Grammar School.

'Foreigner Welcomes' means nothing until it has an object such as 'YOU' or 'PIXIES'

A bit like an ad on LBC radio for some packing company who end it with 'People Possible' What does that mean?

Perhaps I was being pedantic? It was the use of the phrase  'Proper English', when I was expecting, 'Correct' English. However, I won't split hairs. Life's too short.

when child was in primary school (2-3 year waiting list to get in), numerous Farang English speakers as teachers then school could make more money on kindergarten so they dropped the 7-12 grades and got rid of most of the Farang teachers.  When my child came home with an English homework on pronouns, I checked the instructions and noticed that in the 15 sentences, 9 did no even have any pronouns meeting the requirement.  I wrote a quick note to the Thai teacher and sent it back the next day.  My child said that the teacher did nothing with the note so I visited her that afternoon and asked why didn't she just check with one of the Farang teachers.  I was informed that the school director makes up the homework and tests and that the Thai teachers can't change anything nor can they check with the Farang teachers for correction.  I then met with the school director who spent 20 minutes telling me all her academic credentials and awards and I said I wasn't interested in those, only in correct English language lessons for my child.  She said she was an English expert and would not change anything.  We transferred shortly thereafter and later learned

that the waiting lists grew much shorter.  When students learn strictly from rote method only, progress may seem good but ceases to move forward shortly thereafter.  Fortunately, some professional teachers in some schools are changing the regular process and we luckily found both in CMIS.  Seems at least some of the international schools can control their curriculum and their teachers.

There are no plurals in Thai.  They are correct, sorta.  Welcome to the Land of Smile!

I have a Thai friend who runs a restaurant. She regularly checks with me about how to write things in English. I also wonder why more don't check with a native speaker.

Believe it or not it’s much cheaper than mall pharmacies. It’s situated opposite government hospital. People cue at the front, usually not allowed to enter, staff stand by the door, about a meter high, taking orders. They carry stuff that some mall pharmacies don’t. It’s a proper pharmacy with no cosmetic stuff.

It's run by midgets?

I sign like that would scream 'overpriced' to me.

Was a local pharmacy at a mall (not Boots or Watsons), and all the local farangs raved about it on local forum.  They spoke English, so helpful & nice ...

... along with being 5-10X as much as the popular one the locals Thais used.

Expand

For me it would scream: Viagra, Valium and Anabolica available
