Silvio Berlusconi, the former Italian PM who bounced back from sex scandals and corruption allegations, dies at 86

Featured Replies

Silvio Berlusconi, the former Italian PM who bounced back from sex scandals and corruption allegations, has died aged 86.

He died at the San Raffaele hospital in Milan, according to Italian media.

In April, Berlusconi was treated for a lung infection linked to a previously undisclosed case of chronic leukaemia.

A flamboyant billionaire media tycoon, Berlusconi first came to office in 1994 and led four governments until 2011.

He led the centre-right Forza Italia party which went into coalition under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after elections in September, when he was elected to Italy's upper house, the Senate.

Reacting to the news, Italy's Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said Berlusconi's death left a "huge void".

"An era is over... Farewell Silvio," Mr Crosetto wrote in a tweet, adding that he "loved" Berlusconi "very much".

Remembered for being vain, narcissistic, corrupt, vulgar, sex scandals and love for authoritarianism. Remind me of someone.

The Italian version of Boris in many ways!

This is very accurate.

Until Berloscuni, politicians covered up their dirty private lives and demanded journalists not intrude into them.

Berloscuni was an innovator. He grasped that the best way in hedonistic modern times is to deflect attention from policies by encouraging the media to look at his naughty private life.

The media would ask him serious economic questions, and he would ask why don't they talk about his naughty swimming pool party.

You can see that Boris and Trump took notice of this new style.

Not Boris. Someone worse.

Oh go on tell us all!

Is it Trump?

If so I would not describe him as "Flamboyant", as the article states among Berlusconi's  other "attributes"!

Sorry off topic but i can say that both will leave permanent scars and lasting damage that one leader's personality alone can inflict on their countries.

His heart gave out on top of some 19-year-old chick probably...

Sorry but I thought it was Mussolini who invaded other countries i.e. Ethiopia not Berlescoli who only seems to have invaded lady's bedrooms!

Arrivederci, Silvio B.

Grande Capo of TV!

You bunga bunga'd with the best

And always seemed to dodge arrest.

You came back thrice, and ruled nine years.

That would have ground Benito's gears!

You lived life long, played many parts.

And wore more make-up than your tarts...

This scum blamed Zelenskiy for starting the Ukraine war. Good riddance.

Chao.

He certainly embraced la dolce vita. It was refreshing to see someone like him among all the sour faces when he met the leaders of other countries. RIP.
