While virtually any phone will, as you say, connect via Bluetooth what will connect is not at all universal. As an example Apple CarPlay will only connect via USB cable to some, maybe all, Mazda’s you can connect via Bluetooth to the same car for a few things. Other cars have wireless Apple CarPlay though the reliability of the connection is variable.
