I think I got scammed by a girl from a dating website!

First of all, if this post shouldn't be here, admin, please delete.. but I wanted to share this to see if others have been scammed too and  I also wanted to alert everyone.

When I was visiting Bangkok recently, I video chatted with a woman from a dating website  (not sure if it is a good idea to release the name website name). We agreed to meet at a western type restaurant whose main attraction was wine. She said she was a single mom (and I am a single dad). She was indeed beautiful. Agreement was that we meet for wine/snacks. She wanted to get drunk ( red flag?) and then spend the night with me at a nice hotel I was staying at. So we met, ordered wine and some snacks. We enjoyed the company for about an hour. Then she told me she wanted to take me to a restaurant that has Thai cultural shows in Bangkok but that restaurant needed a deposit of 3000 Baht. I was little suspicious about this already, but hey, we are having good time and already "feeling" romantic, I said why not. So I gave that money , she went and "deposited" at a nearby ATM and said something about 50 baht was a surcharge for depositing to that restaurant. After she deposited, she told me it might cost us another 5000 baht or so at the restaurant. So I am thinking 3000 plus 5000 is 8000 Baht, which is kind of expensive for two people for a cultural show plus dinner. I said I didn't have enough Baht, but I should be able to use a western issued credit card. She said since  it was an Isaan type restaurant, they didn't take credit cards. So her suggestion was that I change $ to Baht for at least 5K baht. Sometime during the conversation she mentioned it is for  4 people ( but we were only 2). She said a table's minimum was 4 people. I was really suspicious by now. So, I said I would go to a nearby money exchange to get some Baht. I did walk and did exchange some ( I needed it for other reasons anyway). I almost thought of not coming back to the restaurant but I wanted to pay the bill as a gentleman should for what we ate.  I came back and told her that I did exchange to Baht, but told her I do not feel comfortable about going to that Isaan restaurant as it was not in our plan and didn't like the idea of having 4 people there. When I came back, she was video chatting with another women whom she introduced to me as her friend. I told her I wasn't going to the next restaurant. She asked if I didn't want her to go to the hotel after the Isaan resturant. I said, "no". She said she was going to the restroom and never came back. I thought of calling police and reporting... but I didn't because, I had an early flight next morning and I felt it was not worth fighting for 3K Baht.

I do have per picture from the "date", dating website and her phone and line ID.

Had I gone to that Isaan restaurant.....( I have the name with me as we googled to find the location), I could have been scammed more or may have been taken to unknown place.....killed, mugged...who knows. 

 

I learned a lesson I guess.... and lost 3K Baht, but could have been worse if I wasn't not careful.

Joking aside, I hope that you take this still as money well spent -- I did in cases this happened to me ages ago, as I took it to be the tuition price for a potentially very valuable learning experience, namely that if you give thieves an opportunity, they will use it.

You have to be skeptical on those dates, i had one where she brought a friend, too many suckers out there who just pay for anything. The 3k invite should have been a big no thanks

It is part of the culture to bring a friend along on a first date... it is safer for the lady and if she is serious about a relationship, then she gets to have her friends opinion too. My wife was very traditional and we had many such dates. She would ask first and for me it was ok. I enjoyed the company and meeting her friends as well. There was no scam about it, we did not go to silly cultural shows as the OP, but it was expected that I pay the tab and I knew that when I asked her out. It was never expensive for me.

My own recollection of a Patpong BG with too many tequila shots in her is of her opening my car door on Sathorn Road and releasing a stream of tequila and Som tam poo plaraa into the night air. No BJ.
 

But I think this one wanted to get the OP drunk, not herself, to make it easier to fleece him.

These types of scams are common all over.  Not just Thailand.  You just have to be careful. If it sounds too good to be true it usually isn’t

Good thing the OP didn’t call the cops. He went on a date with an obvious hooker he met online and voluntarily agreed to give her 3k as a deposit for a so called cultural show and then changed his mind and lost his deposit without being able to make his own deposit.

 

The BiB would be scratching their heads about what crime had been committed apart from wasting police time. They would have pointed out that nice Thai ladies don’t invite complete strangers to go out and get drunk with them prior to going back for a jump.

Also 5k to eat at a Isaan restaurant is a red flag immediately.

I feed a dozen on less than half that.

If you went to the restaurant you likely would have been fleeced paying for all her friends for who knows how much. more Then ditched like a chump with no company at all to take to your hotel.

8k is a nice evening at Goji Kitchen and bar at Marriot hotel for two persons. I never spent so much money in the beginning with my wife! 

 

Next time you know you are taken for a ride, normal girls is ok with a bbq restaurant, and even she brings her friend or two with her, it will never end up more than 1500,- baht.

Think yourself lucky things didn't go well and lead to a second date. That would have involved dinner for her entire family, her neighbours and her pet dog. It would have set you back at least 15,000 + you'd need to have a blessing by the local Monk and they're not cheap ????.

This actually happened to me more  20 years ago. Chatted a girl working at an internet cafe. I agreed to take her, and the other one working there too for "dancing" . Then at the BKK disco two or more girls showed up. I paid for all the end of the night getting dumped from taxi at my hotel alone.  A chump.  Later the girl employed tired red-faced lie of a "lend me money for buy the cafe" internet scam.  Still have a pic of these crafty vixens somewhere.  I remember the date because the whole area was bulldozed soon after in the Sukhumvit Square scandal.

The majority of women on the dating sites are opportunists.  Granted, a few serious ones, but mostly scammers.   Its a game.  The cards are dealt to you and you need to be thinking with your upper brain, not the lower one.

 

The majority of Thai women are predators.  You are the predatee.    It is a fun game, much like poker.  So you need to think with a level head.    

 

If the situation sounds to weird and questionable, then pass it up.   They designed the rules to game I'm order to deceive you.   In the LOFS, lying and deceiving are normal business practices.

Get smart, quit taking a hosing.   

If the situation does not  sound right, then it is time to stop.

I read once of someone who was being taken for a ride, with his date bringing along several friends for a free feed off of the farang. He told them he was off to the toilet, and left the restaurant and for them to pay for all the food they had ordered. Serves them right.

I've got a thousand baht for a date, they can eat it in the evening, or take it home with them in the morning.
