This old photo I dug out this morning is from Korat in 1965.

The good old days. 5 baht barfines.

It might be where Dad met Mum.

  • Congratulations. I'm sure mum was a cashier.

  • which of course you never paid.

  • Are your origins why you have a censorious and judgmental attitude about farangs and bar girls?

Nice. I am sure I was born 20 years too late now maybe 30.

Is there somewhere you can find now with the same level of development, or is everything ruined by the internet?

They're samlors (meaning three wheels, but specifically human powered).  Tuk-tuk are motorised samlors, named after the noise of the engine.

Samlors are still used in many upcountry towns and cities:

Thai sign above the English sign says "Taking job applications for a lot of service girls"

I am sure the woman in the photo was worth every baht of her 5 baht.

Almost reminds me of the old Washington Square days in Bangkok minus the tricycles, places like Square One, Country Roads, Silver Star the Texxan, then later Bourbon Street. Bar fines in those days 150 or 200.

No cheap nylon rags from China, no tattoos, no cigarettes.

Doubt there was much shaving or body wax
