On August 10, 2023, at 5:40 PM, Pol. Lt. Col. Punyawach Jantra, duty officer of Kalasin Police Station, received a report about a gunfight and injuries. The incident occurred opposite the local highway district office on Apai Road, Kalasin District, Kalasin Province.

Law enforcement and investigative teams rushed to the scene. The incident took place near a roasted pork shop at the Thung Si Meuang evening market. A wounded man, Mr. Sa-at, aged 51, owner of the roasted pork stall, was found shot in the right cheek. First responders provided emergency medical assistance before rushing him to the hospital, reported Siam Rath.

Initial investigations revealed that the perpetrator, Mr. Woranat, aged 63, used a .32 caliber handgun to shoot Mr. Sa-at. The motive appears to be related to a longstanding debt issue. Mr. Woranat had previously borrowed over 200,000 baht (approx. $6,000) from Mr. Sa-at, and tensions had escalated due to non-payment.

This confrontation wasn't the first; both parties had quarreled over the debt before. The police continue to gather evidence and statements to uncover the full details of the incident.

Witnesses described hearing gunshots after a heated argument between Mr. Woranat and Mr. Sa-at.

Although it's unclear who Mr. Woranat intended to kill when he resorted to violence, his wife disclosed that he had been making ominous statements about wanting to "kill someone" lately.

The case remains under investigation, while Mr. Sa-at recovers from his injuries.

An argument over a debt ended in a man being shot, rocking the bustling Thung Sri Mueang evening market in Kalasin, Thailand.

A restaurateur was shot in the busy marketplace by a 63 year old man, Wanna, following a dispute arising from the latter’s loan.

Just before the shooting at 5.40pm, the victim, 51 year old Sa-ad, who runs a grilled pork neck shop, was having a regular day at work at the local market.

Suddenly, Wanna, who is recognised as a regular customer, crossed over to Sa-ad’s shop, demanding repayment of a loan exceeding 200,000 baht.

The following confrontation escalated to the point where Wanna pulled out a .32 calibre handgun, shooting Sa-ad in the right cheek, leaving him critically injured.

Emergency services rushed to the marketplace shooting scene following the incident. They tried to resuscitate Sa-ad at the location before transporting him to the hospital.

The Thais have a debt problem. About a third of the people in Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy owe a total of 16 trillion baht ($454 billion) to regular lenders — plus an estimated 1 trillion baht borrowed from loan sharks. The official total is nearly as large as the country’s annual output, putting Thailand’s debt ratio higher than the US or Germany. The country’s central bank paints the burden as a drag on economic growth and a threat to financial stability. While populist measures implemented by past and present governments have exacerbated the problem, policymakers have become increasingly concerned and are now striving to fix it.

Don't ever lend to anyone 1.5 years of money if they have no assets you can seize !

i guess that's one way of getting your money back.

No, it's one way of avoiding giving the money back. It was the debtor.

Now I'm confused....the OP says Woranat, the borrower, shot Sa-at the lender, yet the Thaiger article says Wanna was the lender and shot Sa-ad the borrower.

Sloppy reporting all round really.

Yep, first story borrower is shooter, second story lender is shooter.

most Thai who borrow money from another thai or farang never pay it back,  they just don't care once it's handed over .....    I've found that several times after helping some out.

There is a "it's not a loan but a gift" clause when dealing with Thais... never "lend" money to them if you are expecting repayment

Never lend money to them. End of.
