Thaksin Must Serve 1-Year Sentence, No More Sentence Reductions, says Wissanu

Deputy Prime Minister 'Wissanu Krua-ngam' has clarified the process following the announcement of sentence reduction in the royal decree.

 

Former Prime Minister 'Thaksin Shinawatra' will be treated like an ordinary prisoner, with no further sentence reductions, signifying an uncompromising exercise of supreme royal authority. reported Daily News

 

On September 1st, Deputy Prime Minister Visanu Krua-ngam disclosed over the phone that following the publication of the royal pardon announcement on the official royal gazette website, which reduced Thaksin Shinawatra's sentence to 1 year, normal procedures would be adhered to.

 

Thaksin will be treated like any other regular prisoner. In case of illness during his sentence, he will be transferred back to the prison infirmary. If his health doesn't improve, ongoing medical treatment will be provided.

 

Once the announcement is issued in the royal gazette, it will be immediately enforceable, effective from the moment the decree is made public.

 

Thaksin can no longer seek further royal clemency, having already received a royal pardon, and he must serve the remaining 1-year sentence without the possibility of sentence reduction. This solidifies the assertion of unassailable royal authority.

Wissanu is often described as an "expert".

 

Now he is effectively out of office, but still holding forth, he exemplifies the definition of "expert" as: " ex is something which has been, a spurt is what happens when you put a drip under pressure"!

what a circus .....   Thai judicial system is a joke,  it's as corrupt as the RTP itself.

Anyone who goes to court here and expects a fair and proper hearing and judgement will be sadly mistaken.

He's a lawyer. The regime's consigliere. His lips were moving. Do not believe a word he says.

 

Thaksin's sentence currently is one year. He's eligible for parole after serving a third of the current sentence, hence the four months.

Wissanu, a very important player on the Thai political scene the last twenty years.

In 2002 Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra invited Wissanu to become a minister in his cabinet, changing from the civil service to a political career, but also threatened to dismiss him as secretary-general in case of refusal. Thaksin is so very sick he has only  a short time to live, so he can go home to be with his family for the time he has left... and Next year he will be cured totally healthy. alive and kicking....That is the same treatment for other inmates too.. we have seen it by the youth when they got in jail for the demonstrations, bail was grated, royal pardons were granted, even the hungerstrikers who almost died were treated the same...  Yes I feel very sorry for Thaksin.. 15 years in good health and almost dead when he is in Thailand... he could better have stayed away

That's what I was thinking. However he did say Thaksin would be treated like any other prisoner. That seems a bit contradictory.

One could argue getting parole is not the same as sentence reduction. Time will tell, as it usually does.

Parole is not a reduction in sentence. It means he will serve out his sentence on a 'long lease' as do all parolees.

 

Although his leash might be a bit longer than your average parolee.

So, will there be any admission that a deal was made in advance of his return, in exchange for allowing the army to maintain control? I am certain the one year will be served in a very cushy location. And possibly reduced for "health reasons".

Probably not, but if your 'ordinary prisoner' were to die in custody, there would unlikely to be many questions asked.

 

No so with this one. The chopper ride was a shrewd move IMO, just in case.
