Former Thailand Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is expected to be granted parole as early as the latter part of February next year, following a reduction of his original eight-year prison term to a single year. This update was provided by a high-ranking official from the Department of Corrections.

The 74 year old former prime minister made his way back to Thailand last month, marking an end to 15 years of self-imposed exile. This period of exile followed his ousting from power back in 2006. While he was overseas, Thaksin was declared guilty, in his absence, on three counts relating to the abuse of power, conflict of interest, and malfeasance.

Immediately upon his return to Thailand, Thaksin was admitted to a police hospital. He was suffering from high blood pressure and chest pains. He is presently receiving treatment in the same hospital.

In a turn of events, His Majesty the King has seen it fit to reduce Thaksin’s original punishment from eight years to just one year.

Sitthi Sutivong, the Deputy Director General of the Corrections Department, provided some insight into the situation.

I would think October this year would be more accurate! I may be wrong!

An extended parole followed by a full pardon.

Couldn't have written this predictable script any better.

Perhaps we can rest our everything Thaksin obsessions for now.

just as he is released from hospital 100% fit and healthy

At least until Yingluck comes back.

The outcome was a foregone conclusion so there shouldn't be any surprises - we can disagree but unfortunately b ugger-all we can do about it.

And why all the secrecy as to what surgical operation he had recently?

We were never short of medical updates from the beginning.

Will all fugitives which avoided jail for many years be treated like that? Or only the very rich once?

He'll be out for Christmas, so he can play Santa for the grandchildren.

Well, I guess I’m in the minority, but I like him and what he achieved for the foreigners while he was in office. He at least wanted us here and made it pretty easy to get a long term visa. Sure he screwed a few things up, but tell me one pm that hasn’t.

Looks like he is about to do an eye wink, that rascally convict!

Paroled from his VIP suite? ????

Yes, I always interpreted 'parole' as meaning early release from jail ... one would need to start the sentence.

And until then this corrupt, phony con-man will remain "sick". The minute he's "free" he'll be the jet-setting, party going liar and crook he was the entire 15 years he was a fugitive on the run...and just before returning to Thailand on this sweet pre-arranged deal. Liar, cheater, criminal, thief.

I am still waiting for someone to confirm that the ex elected PM doubled the 400,000Bt in a Thai bank for farangs to 800,000Bt. It was said in this form but no one seems to be able to back it up, so I assume that it was not true.

The ANN link below on this subject seems to be dated 2019 which would put it firmly into Prayuth's regime.
