What is wrong with working until you die?

Much better option to come to Thailand when you are young than struggle with all kind of disabilities once you reach the retirement age.

I was born poor, stupid and lazy, but fortunately computers and internet were invented during my lifetime so I could make money remotely. I came to Thailand in my 30's and I think this gave me several huge advantage over old men... one of the major ones is the quality of women I was able to marry and date. Being young also gives you drive to succeed instead of nursing the bottle and listening to bargirl lies all day long. Here comes the internet again where I was able to do a thorough research on all my potential long term gals. Once you have certain standards (no kids, University degree, a full time job) it is pretty easy for a guy in his 30's and 40's to find a quality long term Thai partner. I turned 50 this month and I think I would still have a chance if I was looking.

Imagine the shock and horror of going back to your own country and not being to survive when you are old you say. I don't even understand how can some long timers even utter these words when life in the West for old folk is about million times better. Yes, I am thinking about going back and I will look forward to working, playing bingo and socializing with grandmas in my 50's 60's 70's and hopefully 80's while the taxpayer foots the bill for my every medical need. Why? Because everything I wanted to do was already done years ago.

Going back to the nanny state when you reach senior age is not the end as many want you to believe. If you came to Thailand in your 60's you are doing it wrong.

That is sad.

You generalize to much! Not everyone are or do what you believe they do!

You can't go back to the west. It's changed too much.

The young ones are quite possibly too busy struggling to keep their English teaching gigs lined up to post here.

I'm 60 and my life plan has long been to finish raising a family here in the U.S., and then slow-travel to see and experience many different places, in Thailand and elsewhere.  I've made many scouting trips, and after retiring a few years ago have stayed for up to a month at a time.  To me a good life looks like increasing this to three months at a time, probably breaking a year into three or four segments with one of those segments being in the U.S. but the others being abroad.

If I had done this in reverse order, then I would not have had the experience of having a career (actually multiple careers), building a close family around me, raising kids and reliving my own childhood through them, etc. nor would I have achieved the financial independence with military healthcare that I now get to enjoy for the rest of my life (unless I do something stupid).

Based on family history I expect to live to see age 90, with hopefully at least half of my remaining time in good health.   I would much rather be where I am now, than to have bailed on the west in my 30s having to work as a foreigner in a foreign country for the rest of my life, and with only a grim lifeline back to my original home country.

I hope that changed the poor part. How is the "stupid and Lazy" part going?

UK men?

Working till death ... no thanks.

Can't think of 1, of the many jobs I had, I'd enjoy doing 1 more day there, longer then when I left.  I can always think of something better to do, if nothing at all, and just sitting somewhere, watching the world go by.

Couple hobbies, if turned into a business, might be interesting to do, but also means some kind of schedule, which I don't want at all.  Hate needing to be anywhere at anytime.

I am surprised you would even ask that question.

Obviously the die part.

What I see as a problem for the OP is that after many years in a foreign country (Thailand) you will be happy to go back to your homecountry? Then depending on the country as you not paid into the social security of this country, maybe you will have much lower support in old age (maybe becoming an poor retire at home, or maybe you ever heard working poor).

Probably you not feel home there anymore. You will miss something you had in Thailand before.

If you come here in young age, most forget to safe money for old age. When you old and have no savings I not sure how nice it would be at home. This of course depends on your homecountry.

Life is all about contrasts and add meaning and purpose to have life worth living, and that will always be different for each individual.

Some is happy to just do what everyone else doing and try to fit in as best they cant, and few others constantly seeking out to evolve.

OP might think he have the answer, but seems a bit unmature.

Someone seems jealous.

But, yeah.... you avoid paying income tax in your country when you are young and live in Thailand and then use every benefit under the sun when you are old.

With occasional business class trip to Thailand in your advanced age.

All legal and nanny state approved.

Wow man, how did you come up with this gem?  Most of us know exactly what life would be in the west if we were back.  Nevermind that the cost of living is much higher, but there isn't much of a social life if one is interested in younger females.  It's not much of a life when one is just hanging around waiting to die.

From UK ons.

But the western world is much the same. Women live years longer, but their DFLE is much the same.

I did everything I wanted, on the way to retirement.  Except having kids, as no partner of mine, at the time, was mother material.  Also free up a lot of money, to have fun and be irresponsible as hell.

Got here/TH, at 45, retired 6 months later @ 46.  A year or so later, unplanned, took in a wee one, and she finish Uni 2 yrs ago.  That was pretty cool, especially since having the time & money.  Something that's a struggle for younger folks, and means they can't enjoy all that they want when young.

Since I lived long enough, it all worked out perfectly, mostly unplanned, as never thought raising kids would be that big a deal or as enjoyable & rewarding.  Did the reverse of most people, enjoyed life, then raised the kid afterwards.

I squeezed in as much as possible before retiring, as never really thought I'd make it to 45 yrs old.   Was ignorant about working overseas, or I probably would have took that route.

Working in USA sucked, though self employment was lucrative enough, and made up for it.

69 yrs old come Dec 2023.  All's well that ends well ????

Yes, and they have a MUCH better life than you will have when you are a senior.

I definitely prefer the company of my 35year old massage friend for the evening than I would playing grab a granny at Gala Bingo..................each to our own, you enjoy it when you get there.

I've not gone back, but one AN poster did return broke in his 50s (just before last Xmas) and has been living as a homeless person ever since. No government authority wants to help him.

@simon43 also went back for free medical, and it didn't appear to be that great a time for him either.

Silly post.

If that is your thing, you can pay a cheap hooker anywhere even back home. I would actually argue it is better back home because you get variety as it is not a job RESERVED FOR THAI ONLY!
