1) Cost of living has been going up. People can't spend like they used to so they don't do much. And so they have nothing to talk about, they are bored and they talk nonsense just to get a sense of something. It's a pretty miserable area we are living in.

2) Polarization and radicalism have become the norm thanks to the internet. Information overload is driving people nuts.

3) The moderation doctrine on this forum sucks. Censoring "bad words" and banning people is just moronic and doesn't work. I'm the living proof o it. I swear all the time, I've been banned so many time I've stopped counting and yet I'm still there with a couple of backup accounts lined up just in case. This hygienist approach is bound to fail.

4) Thailand attract mostly poor westerners and life hasn't been very kind to them for the last couple of decades. There is no denying mental health is a massive issue in LoS expat community. Those people will post garbage most of the time just to feel they somehow exist in the eyes of others. Sad but our moronic capitalist society is to blame for that, not them.

5) The expat community is ageing. I see less and less young expats. Young travelers yes but not willing to come live here. Anyways. Old people tend to be boring. They talk about their health problem, their house, their car, their village for those in Isaan, dumb news like a f%cking roadblock that nobody cares about, etc... Pretty boring stuff. So of course those in need of action are going to start posting sh$t just to get stimulated a bit.

6) Thai people have changed. No more "sabai, sabai". It's all about the money now. It's understandable but it makes genuine human interaction harder and shared adventures harder. No wonder people on this forum trash Thais all the time. They don't even know them because our two communities drifted apart since... well since the internet I think.

7) Forums in general are outdated mediums. People used to go on forums to find information. Nowadays you don't really need to do that. If I need something I ask Google or ChatGPT and I get what I need straight away (not to mention the ever growing stock of videos about Thailand out there).

Anyways. Things change. To be honest I find it pretty amazing that a website like AN is still open and able to find sources of revenues. Especially taking into account that the company uses multichannel presence very poorly. I mean it could simply be a Discord server coupled with social medias, a youtube channel and a spotify podcast at this point.

Sorry dear OP but the good old days ain't comin back...

Don't agree with it all but good post. At least you have something to say.

Totally agree! It has been highjacked by a hard core of approx. 12 idiots/Bots/paid for posters who may be increasing the "click count" but are ruining the site!

  • The fun has been lost.   We used to have fun posts about sightings of Michelin men and Mountain Dew and the like.   Now almost every post degrades into pages of off topic bickering

Regarding expat mental issues ...

You're crazy if you don't have mental issues after enduring the last few years in Thailand.

The insidious  thing about mental damage is that you never know you have it.

Sure glad I don't have it.

It would be good to have more Thai females on this forum. They would have more interesting stuff to hear about and a deeper knowledge of thailnd than western women have.

Any Thai in general will have a deeper understanding of Thailand than the average Western person.  However do they understand how that affects expats living here because they have a deep understanding of our culture too?  Do they have a decent understanding of what our various countries are like and the rest of the word like many well traveled expats?

I would expect for most Thais this is not an appropriate or happy place for them to hang out.  But I would like to point out that many expat women do have a lot of valuable experience living in Thailand for decades.  Some own businesses, many speak fluent Thai, and they are quite competent people and they don’t have Thai wives who do everything for them.  I could make a giant list right now but we are not supposed to talk about members.  But I am sure you can think of at least one or two, one who moderates the Health forum and Nancy who died.  There was another woman moderator from Koh Samui.  I have a retired friend who has lived and worked in Asia for 40 or so years and she speaks fluent Thai.  There was a woman who owned a dog boarding business who when I arrived in 2004 spoke Thai and had been here for 11 or 12 years I believe.  I could keep going on.  These people know a lot of things beyond the bar girl situation.

I would say it takes a special kind of courage to live here as a expat woman for any length of time.

I don't really believe any Thai female would have any interest in this forum, which is why I also found the 'Yinn' thing so laughable.

My wife always says when she see's me typing on AN

...."Go play with your farang boyfriends"

Damn women can be so cruel!

Nah. People are nuts regardless of the cause. None of us are mentally perfect. Some people are evil, but we all started out the same from the womb.

A good psychologist would find multiple mental problems in anyone.

IMO if anyone is claiming that they are normal, or mentally perfect they are nuts.

The non working expat community has always been ageing given the difficulty of living in LOS under 50.

The golden days of working expats was before the economic crisis end of last century. Never been as good since.

Young people are too spoiled now. They'll come for a couple of weeks to get messed up on Had Rin with thousands of other drugheads, but have to call mummy every day. Probably wouldn't last long living in LOS as not mentally tough enough.

As it is everywhere. Greed rules everywhere. Wars are started to make money. The poor are swept aside to exist as invisibles to the masters in government, only of importance at election time.

I don't see why Thais would be any different.

I don't know why you say that. It's certainly easier for them immigration wise.

Women, in case you hadn't noticed, are not delicate petals. Some of them are tougher than men, and they are certainly as brutal as any man.

And some (new) members try to beat each other about how many useless posts they can publish in a day.

Is that it?

Depends of those who run this.

Useless topics has increased dramatically, and more and more do comment on it.

I guess many put these certain members on ignore.

I wish the ignore function would include the topic list on the right.

Maybe I would see only half of the current list. But at least the useless c#%# would be filtered out already.

It might be but like anything else, madness expresses itself in a context. The context can be favorable or unfavorable. Polarization favors madness imo. As for the idea of good and evil as well as the theory of the blank slate, it's pseudo-science.

I live in Nimman and I see a lot of young 'uns in my building on VIP and NGO visa's, partic to study Muay Thai. In fact, we're watching Ong Bak (only Muay Thai film ever released in the west) on Netflix with a couple of them later on. They also have Ong Bak 2 and 3, but that's a lot of pot-smoking.

Oldies dying off are more than being replaced. Chinese people under 40 are well-represented on my street too.

Thailand may be a mature travel brand, but it will always have the Lonely Planet vibe of effortless authenticness to the culturally-minded.

At least in Europe the rest of the west. In America and Canada, Tulum, Mexico, is their new version of The Beach.

I think that some of the recent tweaks were long overdue and have made a big difference, there's a different air about the place, I sense we may have turned a corner and stopped the rot.

Thank you for noticing the change, @Mike Lister. 🙏🏼

I can assure you that a lot has happened behind the scenes in regards to how we are moderating this community, and the moderating mindset HAS changed to the better since some 3 months back.

We are simply not so strict with warnings and banning anymore. The moderating team are these days just hiding offensive topics instead of banning members. A changed mindset, I assure you.

All banning of members must have management pre-approval (except for blatant spam, lese majeste posts and obvious abuse etc).

Not true really. I've been banned several times for laughable reasons in the last 3 months. For example, tweaking a word so it doesn't get censored.

Same goes with shadow banning. Some of my posts were hidden for no valid reasons. Like a Airwolf gif to illustrate a post on the recent thai digital wallet aka helicopter money.

Generalised comments on Moderation have been allowed here as it is the Lounge and constructive feedback is allowed. Please do not use specific Mods names etc or the rules will be enforced and your posts edited or removed.

I haven't been suspended, since I came back from my self imposed exile. It used to be pretty routine, but the one who suspended me most has left the forum.

So there is another hidden beach adjacent to a massive ganga farm guarded by murderous armed thugs that speak English badly. Hmmm, that actually sounds quite possible, given it's Mexico.
