Well, fact is that there are only just so many people interested  in posting on what is primarily  a forum designed to appeal to ex pats or long time Thailand visitors.

Once you have succeeded in banning large numbers of them it is tantamount to killing the goose that lays the golden egg.

This is Dan's problem. How to make the forum look like a vibrant and active place. Hence now more than ever before there are a lot of posters of questionable authenticity trying to rake over the dying embers of a much reduced membership trying to get it to behave like an electric car and burst into flames.

Perhaps banning posters is unnecessary  and just deleting their more offensive posts would be more in keeping with keeping up the number of contributors.

The serial complainers are the main reason for that , posters that easily get upset and say "I've reported your post* , that seemed to happen regularly with a few posters constantly reporting posts .

They seemed to view it as some type of game where the object was to get other peoples posts deleted

Totally agree! It has been highjacked by a hard core of approx. 12 idiots/Bots/paid for posters who may be increasing the "click count" but are ruining the site!

  • The fun has been lost.   We used to have fun posts about sightings of Michelin men and Mountain Dew and the like.   Now almost every post degrades into pages of off topic bickering

You are preaching to the converted.

This forum is done for.  Too many ads....too many fake members posting nonsense.

The moment Sheryl stops contributing to this forum it will be as dead as a dodo.

I see George's account is also now posting regularly, I suspect it is not even him writing the posts.

Nam Keng Man, Phronesis, Briggsy, Colin Neil, Bulldozerdawn, et al.....

Lots of quality members all gone now...to where?

Please post if you know.

I used to get suspended so much that i wanted to leave it for good. I had various periods I didn't post, but I was always going to come back for the fun of the US election, and then Gaza happened.

I agree that there are certain posters that are trying too hard to be controversial, but not enough posters to keep the discussion going.

If the forum ends, it'll be a shame for those that don't bother with the Pub or World News sub forums, as the rest are valuable resources for those still living in LOS.

IMO it was a mistake cutting back on the ladyboy and sex related threads as they always get most reponses, and there are not many topics that get much interest anymore.

Agree 100%. It used to be way more interesting before it got sold first time.

Also too many allowed to get away with being personally insulting. In my case I have put so many that insulted me on ignore that I miss most of the posts.

I was banned a couple of times for that when I responded to insulting comment in kind.

Then, instead of pressing the reply button, I pressed the report button.

If they want to ban someone then they should ban the people who started with the insults.

I noticed many times the insulting comments were removed. But I am not so sure if those members were also banned for a couple of days like I was.

It was different obviously in the "old ages".

But it also felt that there was a certain patriarcal hierarchy at the time. What mattered seemed to be the "status" and the persona of the poster, would I dare to say with due humility and respect to the father founders and father posters here !

Old timers would previously rule and run the show. Sometimes rough or  rude with the newbies. Obviously a certain form of bullying in the old ages, excess of bans or moderation,  led to dwindling of numbers and visitors.

The current trend seems more open, less posters getting banned,  fresh topics and ideas.  (i once got banned years ago despite only neutral comments on the grounds that there were to many posts!!).

To keep the post short, who gives a hoot on the "status" or similar of a poster ?

What counts are the contents, the matter of what is posted, what is commented and if it's entertaining or not ? (refering to general topics of course, not important questions of immigration or others that require factual and flawless responses).

As for the previous grammar Police, IMHO they are usually people with nothing to say.

I would definately enjoy a topic posted by Bob rather then some cut-paste lesson in morals on international geopolitics that won't change my daily dip for a hoot.

Sure it can remain serious, but don't take yourself to seriously. A newbie with 50 posts can be a top UN negociator in the real world. A top ranked dude, with 100k posts could plainly a Sports Bar VIP...or the other way round of course,

Here everybody is equal with no visual physical or social or barriers. That's what keeps AN a nice place to laugh, go mad or enjoy behind a screen and of course to get useful and very valuable information.

It is always good practice on social media to remain open to all, be nice, polite. If you don't like a post(er) and his nasty comment, plainly put on ignore. It could be of good practice also for real life to learn as such too. I never understand people who criticize AN or the currents standards but still remain ? I don't like a place, I just leave. You won't change the world, as I always remind myself when I  get overconfident on a debate.

Nobody  wants to be roughly or rudely challenged. Unfortunately  it seems to remain the norm with a few here and there, but quite like the old ages.

It's done perhaps differently, but the bullyish attitude does  remain within a minority. But that's part of life and part of the fun. This may be the ransom of social media freedom with anonymity of the couch sofa, enabling a few to open their valves of inner issues.

But does all of this really matter ? Have fun, share your thoughts and ideas (the more relaxed the better)  and always remember that one person's fool, can be God to another..or the other way round of course.  Thank you for reading.

Sometimes when I reported an insulting post it didn't get removed, which is very annoying.

I'm also sure that they never got suspended, as they kept posting, even when I reported a stalker, who still got to post, though I did put him on ignore.

If not for the ignore function I'm sure I'd have left the forum long ago, but sometimes I can see a page that is full of ignored posters, I was insulted by so many that I put on ignore.

The site offers some good help value forums and threads with some weedy posts, the rest shouldn’t be taken too seriously or personally and approached with entertainment value without emotion, of which is entertaining in of itself, in other words don’t let what others post be a bother because it might incite social dysfunctionality.

Name calling rude posters.

I have been trying to find the Mountain Dew ad where a girl in a green shirt swings a baseball bat.

Any ideas?

I have been a member here for awhile now and i also think it is changing.

Not really for the good but that would be a sign of the times.

I can almost name some members by reading their responses without seeing their handle.

So a lot of  times emojis are not really anonymous .

Sometimes you can really tell which continent the posters come from.

I have never felt the need to block anyone but i have considered a few times to leave this forum.

Then again there are some good people here and there is a lot of good info.

Lately i see a lot of topics and decide not to respond because i know the posters spit out the same old drivel and why bother.

I did enjoy the music topics but it seems every new member(poster) posts the same music that already passed by a few times.

It is what it is and we will have to deal with that.

Maybe it would be a good idea to open a special place for folks who like to insult and swear at other people without any moderation?

That could be fun!

One other thing to mention is that there seem to be a lot of people here that are easily confused, instead of using that stupid emoji why not just ask a question?

Oh WOW. I haven't seen him post for ages, and I'd completely forgotten about him.

Perhaps he and that guy were the same poster with different usernames.

Are all these emoji's anonymous for everyone?

Is there some kind of advanced tier whereby you can see who's spamming you?

If not, what a ridiculous feature. Who thought that was a good idea?

I'm on a tablet. You get a notification "somebody reacted etc..."

Whats the point in actually adding anything personal or of value if you just get spammed with emoji's.

All social media and forums are dependant on member reactions in order to get the algo right. If the algo is right, the ranking in search engines improve. Emoji's are a vital part of user engagement.

Or would you prefer a completely text based forum?

I am sure some admin(s) will be able to see all the details.

I am surprised about people talking here about spammers and stalkers regarding emojis.

Is that really a problem for anybody?

If I write something and some people are confused or sad or laugh about it, then maybe for about 1/2 second I think about why. And then I move on. Why care about what some anonymous people think? And even if a knows person is confused, so what? Who cares?

I, like many other members, like the emoji reactions.

I think they are helpful in many ways. I.e. if someone asks a question in the visa or electric forum and there are different answers. Maybe one answer has a few thumbs up. That is obviously a good sign that the answer is correct.

And if I write my opinion about something in the pub then it is sometimes interesting to see how many people support that, etc.

Sometimes I expect that many won't like what I write, but I get positive reactions. And sometimes the opposite. It's interesting how other people think and react.

And all this works only with emojis counted directly at the posts. I don't want to look through all the following messages to get and overview about the reactions. I might read the other posts, but not always.

Too many inane posts to keep the masses coming back, too many silly threads of people posting whatever pops into their head.
