Some people are simply extremely opinionated and can be much more offensive than I would like.  Hard for these type and maybe some non-expressed empathy is the correct response.  Nice to have the option to choose a response.

Nice to have the 'ignore'option with these people. I have no time for sad, anonymous keyboard warriors.

My hope is for a block feature as I am sure many of the ignored still stalk me and reply, even when they know I can't read their posts.

Totally agree! It has been highjacked by a hard core of approx. 12 idiots/Bots/paid for posters who may be increasing the "click count" but are ruining the site!

  • The fun has been lost.   We used to have fun posts about sightings of Michelin men and Mountain Dew and the like.   Now almost every post degrades into pages of off topic bickering

Although I don't disagree that '.. some (new) members try to beat each other about how many useless posts they can publish in a day' I don't think it's close to being 'the death of this forum'.

These posters (with seemingly endless time on their hands) are a nuisance but I would counter they are easily ignored for the more interesting stuff that still gets posted here. I personally like the political, economic and world events posts made and use it as an opportunity to educate myself on subjects that I may only have a cursory understanding of. When debating I prefer to use facts rather than feelings which forces me to do some research which in turn hopefully leads to a deeper understanding of the topic in hand. I see this as a positive thing that I probably wouldn't have done if it wasn't for AN posting the subject for debate.

I think you get what you want out of this forum. You can find negativity here if you want (similar to those annoying posters who find unnecessary negatively with Thailand) but with selective choosing and selective posting, there's some good stuff still here.

^^^^Agree.  Lots of great info on this site.  If I need anything Thailand information I add Asean Now to my google search as a starting point.  As for debating here, it became nearly impossible for some but now conversations like this one are allowed.  Big improvement and as of yet the posters that constantly bombarded mods demanding posts be removed and members banned are not here on this thread.  Are they embarrassed?

Post removed.

You know very well discussing specific members is not acceptable, please don't do it.

There always was troll like posters that would be banned from time to time. But then there was an older crowd of posters who started off with the forum and grew with it until the forum had a mass clear out in order to attract the younger crowd. Many of those came back repeatedly under different names, many moved on to other forums, I did both until I reached a point where the conversation and topics were not that interesting any more. I do believe that most posters from the older group really wanted to help other people and most did using PM's rather than the public forum. If I compare the quality of debates between today and 10/15 years ago, todays are seriously lacking, by comparison, there's no depth, no expertise, most of the comments are very superficial and without any meaningful Thai focus.

How would that work? blocking would make your post invisible to them?  I haven't ignored anyone because I find aggressive posters  interesting but some are becoming a bore so might try ignoring someone today. I assume you can always unignore.  I worry that I would only see posts I agree with in the same manner all social media creates blind spots.

My 2 cents.

Site went 'woke' some years ago.

That chased the Right-leaning crowd away.

The other reason is the grim-reaper.😄

Plus..I don't see a lot of younger blood settling here..plenty of competition from elsewhere

I ask again, what does 'woke' mean.

I don't see that left / right leaning has changed.

Grim reaper?

I meet, usually by accident, new foreigners all the time, seems to me their origins, background, age group is same as before.

Until very recently I lectured both bachelor and masters degree programs (in business) in English at several Thai unis. Always a sprinkling of western students:

- Some coming specifically to study business at a Thai uni, in English. (and some specifically to get a student visa as a means to continue being here).

- And westerners who had come as tourists, stayed and decided they needed to get a degree to have a chance of better employment.

Ages of both groups about 19 to early 40's.

It was annoying when a certain poster chased me around the forum putting "laughs" on every post I made, and when I PM'd a mod to complain I was told that it was OK because he's a long time poster with lots of posts.

That problem got solved because the poster in question doesn't post anymore, but I used to have a PM conversation with someone that disliked it so much he left the forum because of it.

Now we don't know who is putting them we can't even complain about being stalked.

Why do you care about that at all.

It's like a dog barking across the street. It's a dog barking, just ignore it.

I too haven't ignored anyone as I want to hear all sides of a debate, even from the ill-informed.

There is a tendancy for people to retreat to their own echo-chambers (including myself) so as annoying and biased as some posters may be on a subject, I've never felt the need to put them on 'ignore' as if you don't hear their side then you're not hearing all of the debate nor probably what many, many people actually think.

I see it as a way of trying to understand the psycology behind a viewpoint, which in turn I think is quite fascinating in itself.

Sorry, but I'm with that poster on this point, there's nothing constructive or useful about emojie's, except for those who are unable to construct a sentence or who want to antagonise.

Another angle:

Nowadays there's more webboards where anybody can post (some very simple to join, some a bit more complex to join).

And there's now TigerTalk, which I see serving a different purpose but (at least so far) it doesn't have the broadness  and helpfulness that AN has had for years.

Tiger is getting some attention but I guess because it's new.

I note that Rooster has disappeared. I wonder why, not that I was a fan.

But does the above mean that AN has failed. NO.

Perhaps easy to ignore for some but not easy for others.

Also, I've just noticed today that all of the past history of posts has disappeared from my profile.  I'm assuming that is site-wide.  The only post history showing is today's.  Another brick in the wall.

There are levels to disagreeable posters here.  Thaibeachlover can be quite offensive to some posters( I'm not one of them ) .  I did have one disagreement with him and had to ask if he had mistaken me for someone else. He was extremely aggressive.  Most his posts are not an issue and the ones that are can easily skimmed.

My point is that Onemorefarang doesn't have many haters and not the case for him and possibly me.  As you, I don't need to see their name and think it helps diminish the herd that used to group up on certain posters.  They lost interest when they couldn't high-five with others in the herd.

I never thought about myself as right-leaning.

But since the woke captured a big part of the left anybody who was in the center or center-left is now considered to be right-wing by the woke.

Here's an idea why not attract Thai posters (like Yinn!) have a section for wife's and girl friends, even bar girls. Could even be just for Thais in Thai language. That dreadful forum Thailand-uk did something like that.

Good idea. They should all start with a picture and details like age, weight, etc.

Firstly Yinn was not real.

I disagree.

There are occasions when some very helpful information, or advice, is put forward by posters. I think it only reasonable to have a mechanism to recognise that - or thank them. Yes, you can pen a physical reply to them but that seems unnecessary most of the time if a 'thumbs up' was available.

A range of emoticons is just puerile - thumbs up/thumbs down should be enough.

imo the main problem with this forum is/was the heavy handed moderation.

granted in recent times they seem to have taken their foot off the pedal a bit and let comments and threads fly which should always be the case unless said comments are obviously vulgar or offensive.

Also the terms and conditions are far too vague and wide open to interpretation.

I think a lot of posters probably got bored being banned all the time for something small like reacting with a cry/confused emoji on a mods post or something similar.

Mods, by their very nature and exposure to online content every day should have a fairly thick skin.

It would seem that many asean now mods are snowflakes and ban people for next to nothing.

When you ban your members you are biting the hand that feeds.

Please remember that!

I agree with the positive side of the equation but less so about the other.

For me a different opinion is no reason to ignore people.

Personally I ignore people who are so full of themselves that they don't want to understand that not everybody thinks exactly like they do. I.e. the current wars are a good example. I have my "favorites" in those wars. But I also understand why other people speak for the other side. It happens only very seldom that the good fight the bad. Mostly they are all in part good and in part bad.

Posters who don't understand this are dimwits or ignorant. I won't waste my time with people like that.

I think it was this morning that I looked at the page with my last posts. And it was empty.

It's obvious that someone is playing around with the forum software, and it seems that person is not exactly an expert.
