Luxembourg family demands justice after fatal road accident

A tragic accident in Phuket has left the family of a young woman from Luxembourg seeking answers.

 

Nineteen-year-old Schintgen Cey-lan was killed in a road collision earlier this month, along with her American boyfriend, 21 year old Nickolas Joseph Ayoub. The two were riding a motorbike when a car, driven by Russian national Irina Pustovalova, hit them from behind. The incident was recorded on CCTV, shedding light on the circumstances of the fatal incident.

 

The accident, which occurred in the early hours of November 5 on Wiset Road, Rawai, saw both Cey-lan and Ayoub die at the scene. Pustovalova, who was injured in the crash, was hospitalised before the police arrived. Her car had veered off the road, ending up in a ditch after colliding with a power pole.

 

The recording from Rawai Municipality’s CCTV shows that the couple was riding at a reasonable speed and was in the left lane when they were hit. The right lane was free of traffic.

 

Despite the arrival of Major General Saksira Phueakam, the national Tourist Police Commissioner, in Phuket the next day, no information regarding the accident has been released by the police or local authorities. Phueakam had arrived to spearhead an increased campaign for tourist safety.

 

Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat has since assured Royal Thai Police and other officials that significant steps are being taken to enhance tourist safety.

 

In the wake of the tragic accident, Cey-lan’s family reached out to European news agency RTL to share their ordeal. Cey-lan was visiting her grandmother in Phuket with her parents when the accident occurred. Her aunt, Zara-ly Pizzuto, provided details of the night it happened.

Another tragic accident. Another 2 young lives extinguished by a reckless driver.

However, it was early morning, the danger of getting involved in a fatal accident here in Thailand is very high. There are people driving on the roads not able to perform in an appropriate way. Too fast, too much alcohol or other drugs, or just too tired to drive properly. For those who come here for holidays I got an advice: don't use a motorbike but rent a car or use public transport.

Thailand attitude: not Thai related, not our business, had it been a Thai person affected, the police would have been in boots and all...

Thais die on the roads all day every day.. a common occurrence that hardly garners any attention, especially from police.

Foreigners are an exception as bad publicity might affect tourism, don't expect the investigation or any proceedings to be splashed all over the news.

Should have taught this kids to stay off motorbikes ...especially in Thailand.  Too many foreigner's don't take the dangers of Thailand seriously, just go to the airport anyway and you will see them in wheelchairs, with bandages up their legs, etc.  Drive through Thong Lor area in BKK and watch expats walk side by side on small soi's.. It's all their senses go out the window when they are here.

How sad, an innocent young couple doing the right thing.  Riding a motor bike anywhere in the world is a huge risk let alone in Thailand up there in the world's worst accident statistics.

So sad especially if they were unaware.  

Hopefully the world-level publicity of this tradgedy will increase awareness to potential tourists.

Regardless of driver nationality, If they've been nabbed and processed, what more can police do?   "Reckless" accidents are par for the course, as is being posted. When in Thailand, expect the statistics to complete your fate.

They were riding in a lane at at a reasonable speed and struck from behind -had nothing to do with their senses the other driver is an idiot -manslaughter.

Thailand will do everything in its power to damp down "world-level publicity" as bad for tourism. Much like they do regarding mysterious deaths on 'Isla de la Muerte', in the gulf of Siam.

It happened November 5th, no follow-up to where the Russian driver is now?  Were drug and alcohol tests administered on her?  Did she do a runner and is back in the Worker's Paradise? 

Seems like reasonable questions for a reporter to seek answers to.

I personally saw the car in the morning and the destruction it caused and speed was the main cause these Russians come here drinking alcohol all night then drive home this Russian woman needs to be put in prison for the rest of here life, I want to know why the American embassy is not getting involved nor the US state department if the yanks start making waves then the Thai coppers would have to do something,, two innocent people minding there own business when Russian rubbish comes along and kills them,,, lock her up

Maybe so.. but can you tell me if that is their helmet I see stapped to the handle-bar?  If they were not wearing helmets, surely they also contributed to their demise.  With that said, RIP :(

In Thailand it doesn't matter how well or how carefully you drive. You can be wiped out in an instant by someone who doesn't do the same. Usually by a Thai, but in this case it was a Russian and, from videos I've seen on YouTube, they are as reckless at Thais.

Holidaying in Vietnam ATM. Thailand has to be safer than the stupidity of drivers here. Cyclists, motorbike riders or drivers! Been handling my mio in Pattaya 15 years, hired a motorbike a few days, with a few days to go, won't be hiring another day. The honking even more ridiculous!

In the original article it did show the CCTV footage, just back from there is a set of traffic lights and the camera from the showed it all,

She was/is a real estate agent with a office in Rawai, the day after the accident somebody  blasted her FB page with the article, she cleared all that out and all of her own photo's, whether she is still operating I dont know, her office is down a soi so I would have to drive down there to see,

No doubt, as with the case of my old English mate Pete Pickering, on Samui. The  Russian will swiftly be deported after a sum is paid over.  Thai justice for farang .....my arse.

A very sad story. Parents must be heartbroken. My sympathy to them.

Don't expect the Thai government to do anything, although having RTL Media involved certainly helps.

Not sure if the Russian driver has offered compensation of any kind?

Or, better, is being accused of men slaughter, reckless driving, or anything.

The Russian was tested for alcohol, drugs or anything?

Probably a mystery at this point and it will remain a mystery I'm afraid...
