There's an unwritten rule for when you win the lottery or inherit a lot of money, esp. in Thailand, namely: "Move away from where you live asap."; otherwise, 100+ relations and people claiming to be a relation will visit you asking for a loan; every Tom, Dick, and Harry (organisation and charity, fake or real, too) will pester you for money, neighbours too, and thieves will gravitate to your home. You'll never have any peace. If you don't lend the money asked for the people asking for money, including friends for decades will hate you forever.  I think that she knows the "rule" and has fled. ...  And I was hoping that she would lend me 500,000 Baht. I promise I'll pay it back!

but why wouldn't you want to share with family?

why would you want to greedily hang on to it for yourself?

spend it on a lavish house with 15 rooms you don't need while relatives are struggling. that makes sense.

The new husband IS the prime suspect according to the police.

Has a mia noi/gik.

Wife still not found.

(news from the breakfast table).

Wait for more.

It has been the lead news for two or three days. On a North Thailand loop trip. Every morning (& evening) on hotel TV's we get the latest breathless updates. Garf!

Rather surprised the AN CSI unit is so far behind on this. I expected they would have solved it by now. Sad showing so far.

I'm betting you're not a financial adviser, that's a very small sum to try and live off the returns from.

Kind of depends how old one is, and how extravagant ones lifestyle,

She got a new one.

Well, keep her away from me, I don't want her ฿ millions...would put me in higher tax category.

Impossible for (most) Thais. Status is all.

I have always thought that, if my b/f won the lottery, the whole of Surin & Buriram would know within 24 Hours.

Used not to be the case. In the old days people here with money kept a very low profile. Increasing Chinese influence changed all that, and showing off has become the norm.

The rumor mill--- A few days after she disappeared. Her new husband left for Phuket, with a backpack and a suitcase and returned a couple of days later without the suitcase. She weighed around 90k. so was quite small.

Let them enjoy their momentum of consumerism, hedonism and materialism.

90k? Are you sure?

13 million Thai baht would not go far in Switzerland but for a Thai living in Thailand it’s a small fortune and if you go around spending it like no tomorrow then there would be a lot of jealousy amongst not just friends but also family . Maybe the police should check her bank account and see if, when and where money has been withdrawn  especially since she disappeared all ATMs  have camera’s ! Mystery solved

Golden Rule: when it comes to money & business tell people nothing. Loose lips sink ships.

Because you have investments & can help those that matter with the occasional cash gift. Otherwise you become target number 1 and you refusal to help makes you unlocked by everybody. Grow some common sense.

If someone vanishes and the only evidence is that person's motorcycle left near a pond.... do you really need a spirit to tell you to look in the pond??

So her Swiss husband died and that's where she got the money?

That's what the report stated quite clearly.

Well, hopefully she just ran off with the money, and 13 million bt ain't so much by Western standards; still, I am reminded of that old Farang maxim "never be worth more dead than you are alive" .

So how would the young relative know/think she was dead?

The spirits told her, it's there in the OP.

So many possible outcomes to this scenario.  The new Swiss husband, the sister, other relatives, even the abbot of the nearby Wat could all be possible suspects.  Or maybe she just ran off with the money to start a new life somewhere else.

Doesn't sound like she has much left, just over 7m, and she made loans to 'Others' I'd be checking her gambling buddies to whom she may have loaned the money to. Still sound like she was being a loan shark to me.

"That's a fortune". I know I could take that amount and invest it and probably never have to work again and live a good life in Thailand.  Just like the how much do you need to retire in Thailand question it depends a lot on what level of lifestyle and healthcare you require

If one were to only spend 30k thb a month the sum of 13MThb would last over 36 years with interest accruing on the unused principal.  Owning our house as we do, unless we decide to travel or buy extra stuff, all we actually spend is about 30k Thb per month on food, utilities and gas for the car.

If you're not worth more dead than alive, you're doing something wrong.

There was no suggestion, whatsoever, that she was a loan shark.

No, really?

Not sure if this was hinting at that though?

Whether someone could or not depends entirely on their own personal circumstances and of course their age. So it is more than feasable that for some it would be possible.

So who was she lending others money to? a loan is normally repayable + interest. That is the definition of a loan. IMO that is a definite suggestion she is/was a loan shark. A loan is not a Gift.

But not in Thailand. Here a 'loan' is a gift covered in face-saving cosmetics.

Yes, dead people are known for murdering their widows after the fact. Where do you think the money came from? You might want to read the linked story
