Swedish Swim Coach Fatally Falls from Pattaya Hotel

A 60-year-old Swedish swim coach tragically lost his life on Sunday morning after falling from the third floor of a hotel on Pattaya Third Road.

According to authorities, Pattaya police received a report of the incident at approximately 2:06 AM on February 4th. They rushed to the scene at an unidentified hotel on Pattaya Third Road, along with a rescue team from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation.

 

At the hotel entrance, authorities discovered the lifeless body of the victim, a Swedish swim coach, 60, whose name was withheld pending his family notification. He had fallen from his room, located on the third floor, which is about 15 meters from the ground. The body sustained serious injuries, including various fractures. The body was covered with a white cloth before being transported to a nearby hospital.

I'm always puzzled by these events (accident or suicide?).

 

I realize that the Thais carefully design their buildings with very low 'guard rails' but anyone who goes out on their verandah can see that for themselves ...

Many are forced out there to have a smoke, doing so in the room and fines are threatened.

It's many many years since I smoked a cigarette but I don't recall falling over as being part of the experience?

I suspect an elbow or two on a wet railing could be part of the experience.

So true and for that reason I always try to book a ground floor hotel room . Indeed I have stayed in a hotel that had added to the height of the balcony rail , bringing it up to chest level . The low rails maybe OK for an averaged height Thai person but for  foreigners who are often around 6 feet tall and more  the rails are not fit for purpose . You would think that with the common occurrence of hotel falls the authorities would have  realised the problem and called for the rail heights to be increased and also not climbable for toddlers .

Lots of people lean out over them to get a better view around them.  With the low railings once your torso is on the other side of the rail the majority of your wieght is on the wrong side.

I don't get this. Thai's call the ground floor the 1st floor so effectively him falling from the 3rd floor was really only the 2nd level above ground. Hardly seems high enough to die from

Some people live from 5th-6th even 7th floor falls.....It just depends how you hit the ground....

 

To be on the safe side I think 15th to 20th floor should be a minimum..

I am guessing that in the majority of these cases, the reason is the low railing. A studio room that I used to rent in Saphan Kwai had a very low railing. I nearly fell once, after losing my balance in the small balcony due to wet floor. I became extra careful after that.
