Chinese tourist killed by a pickup truck on his first day in Thailand

A Chinese tourist has been killed by a fast moving pickup truck as he was using a zebra crossing on the way back to his hotel on Bang Na Garden Road in Bang Bo district of Samut Prakan province last night.

 

A Thai guide said that the victim was among a group of Chinese tourists who arrived in Bangkok Friday morning and he led the group on a sight-seeing tour of Bangkok.

 

The victim left his hotel room last night to buy something at a convenience store just across the road from his hotel. As he was returning to his hotel, a pickup truck, travelling at high speed and with its siren blaring, failed to stop, struck the victim on the crossing and drove off.

 

EMTs soon arrived at the scene of the accident, administered CPR and used a defibrillator to try to save the life of the victim, but to no avail. He died at the scene.

 

Witnesses say the truck driver later stopped at a nearby convenience store for a while and then drove away.

 

Tourist police said that the pickup truck used a fake license plate.

oh dear  '    only lasted 1 day .....  very sad indeed ....   the tour guide didn't mention zebra crossing's in the Bangkok sight-seeing safety speech.

I don't suspect even for a moment that the driver paid for that story to be released by the boys in brown. 

 

Sceptical?  Absolutely. 

 

Unless of course the driver was a drug runner and didn't want to stop because of what he was carrying.  Might explain why he was heavy on the horn/siren. 

 

Pedestrian crossings aren't treated the same here as in my home country.  I was amazed on my last visit to see cars stop if you're on their half of the crossing.  I'd been away so long I'd forgot they were supposed to do that!

This is what happens when one comes from the countryside, in China, where one is used to walking in the middle of the road.

 

Sad, really.

 

But, if you have ever been to China, in the countryside, then you will see many people, typically, walking in the middle of the road.

 

Everyone knows this.....

 

First and Last Day in Thailand turned out to be less than an auspicious day.

If you come from a country where traffic drives on the right it's easy to forget to look to the right when crossing a Thai road.

 

That said , I hope they can somehow trace the pick up driver using CCTV and bring him do justice.

  As some roads are one way roads, its always better to look both ways before crossing , whatever Country you re in

They should actually eliminate all zebra crossings in Thailand. All they do is give pedestrians, especially foreign ones, a false sense of security.

No, when folk road tax their ride, they should be given a flyer on the penalty for not stopping at a crossing, and the person behind the desk should say, "Be warned"..........😉

I have to agree with you on this BangkokHank, as I have seen so many "nearly accidents" due to both pedestrian and driver ignorance as to how these things work.

 

Indeed I was paying a visit to a hospital in Bangkok and a friend of mine warned me about the traffic on one of the main roads and suggested I use the pedestrian crossing which was controlled by traffic lights; so I did, and whilst all of the traffic chose to stop, one idiot in a truck came barrelling down the road and missed me by a whisker, and then only because I had seen him out of the corner of my eye past the other stationary traffic.

 

Unfortunately Thai folk do not know how to use roundabouts, pedestrian crossings, or have any "road sense" whatsoever and I don't think that will ever change given the current status/nature of the training given to 1st time drivers – – i.e. just about zilch.

Zebra crossings in much of the world just convey permission to cross with no fear of a jaywalking violation.  They don't convey right of way.  The traffic signals do that.  Or they don't, if there's no signal there.  There's quite a few zebras in Bangkok that have signals.

 

 

Do you figure traffic would ever move if there were no signals to regulate pedestrians at intersections like this?

 

Edit:  Reminds me of some protests in So California where I lived in the '90s (where zebra crossings do convey right of way).  Protestors completely gridlocked traffic by simply walking back and forth across the zebras.

After a doctor was killed on a crossing, the BiB/Gov got their act together, painting vivid crossings and upping the fines for those flouting the law.

Even up in the sticks we have red and white crossings outside schools.......

 

The other day I was approaching one with kids on it, a car from the other direction just drove towards the kids, they jumped back, I put my hand on the hooter, I think he/she got the message...🤗

And then what?  Remove all the traffic lights because Thai's regularly drive through them at red?  End all speed limits because they are ignored?

 

The answer is, and I think we all know this, have a police force that gets off its ar$£ and ENFORCES THE LAW.

 

Its absolute madness that drivers ignore pedestrian crossings and just about every other rule of the road on a daily basis.  The subject has been discussed many times here and I'm sure by the entire Thai population.

 

What do the Thai government do?  Make announcements about new laws every time a tragedy hits the headlines - the result of which is ZERO. Just a bloody talking shop - year after year.

 

Thailand isn't short on laws - it is plainly and simply short on ENFORCEMENT

I totally agree, from first hand experience. On my many trips to Thailand, coming from a country where we drive on the right, I had great difficulty adjusting. Fortunately, on several occasions, I encountered polite Thai drivers when I did something stupid while on foot.

Maybe you miss the story he was at a cross walk.

You right in a way where the stupidity of leaders to put a crosswalk in the middle of a Soi where no controls and drivers here drive as fast as they like.

I guess when the police finish their investigation conclude to place the crosswalk down the road or top cope assume cars technology cars can go as fast as they like and stop on a dime.
