Police are searching for the gunman who shot dead a 10 year old girl on a palm plantation in the southern province of Krabi. The girl’s family believes the shooting was motivated by a dispute over land concessions.

The fatal shooting took place in a palm plantation in the Khao Panom district of Krabi at about 8pm on Wednesday, April 17. The deceased, 10 year old Neeranuch “Mai” Narkwong, was shot in the back of her neck and died upon arrival at the hospital.

Mai’s aunt told ThaiRath that five children, including Mai, were playing together outside a hut on the palm plantation when the incident occurred. The aunt said she heard several gunshots and saw Mai collapse. She rushed to carry Mai while other children crouched on the ground in fear.

According to the aunt, the gunman committed the crime alone and fled the scene on foot, as she did not hear the sound of a motorcycle or car engine. She was unable to determine the direction in which the perpetrator had gone.

The aunt further explained that Mai and her parents had moved into the hut six to seven months prior. The land on which they resided belonged to the Royal Forest Department, and Mai’s family held a concession to operate a palm plantation.

As the concession was nearing expiration, Mai’s family faced the prospect of losing their livelihood. Consequently, they remained on the plantation, hoping to appeal to officials to renew their concession.

Mai’s family was not the sole local community in need of the land. Others also sought the concession, leading Mai’s family to believe that this could have been the motive behind the shooting.

Khao Panom Police Station officers investigated the shooting scene and found nine bullet holes on a cottage wall.

Police estimated that the gunman was approximately 10 to 15 metres away from the cottage when firing the shots. However, they had not yet uncovered any substantial evidence to ascertain the identity of the gunman.

Officers surmised that the perpetrator did not have lethal intentions and merely sought to intimidate Mai’s family. Police announced their intention to summon Mai’s parents and relatives for questioning at a later time.

Truly the heartbreaking case indeed.

Life and future of the young child denied by the cold-blooded murderer.

Mourn for the victim. Hope that the killer is busted soonest.

In Thailand, when the murderer is arrested, police arranges the Ceremony of Revenge for the Victim's family.

People of the close kin to the dead, can step on the head of the criminal with their shoes.

In Thai Buddhism, people's heads are regarded the holy part of the human body(where their guardian angels rest).

So it is the ultimate insult that that sacred part is pushed around with the feet of other people.

I can't wait to see that happens to that thug who took away her life.

Running a palm plantation is NOT easy living. To make that commitment, (and obviously there is a family involved), my opinion is....they were there, had been there running their plantation, and for the love of all things holy, permit them to stay. I doubt he and his family have a plan "B".

This truly is a land of contrasts. I have been here 8 years  (after 2 years of military service in 1970-72) and STILL have a difficult time reconciling the evil that resides here. I suppose it is my fault ( the difficulty reconciling, NOT the evil) as this evil permeates the entire earth.

My heart simply breaks for this family.

Would anyone in this ASEAN News community be willing to help this family in some small way?

I could swing 1000 baht and not upset my monthly budget. I am not a big poster here, am not proficient in computer tasks. Someone set it up...? Or am I just a maudlin old man?

Intimidate by shooting at a group of young children??? If intimidation was the intention, he could have shot into the air.

He knew what he was doing. String the POS up.

Cowardly act, disgusting person who should get the death penalty.

My friends wife lent money to a policeman, he didn't pay it back she bad mouthed him, he lost face, drove by their house and fired several 9mm shots through the front doors, I suppose he also had no intention to kill, only thing that saved my friend and his kids was the bedroom walls were concrete, nothing happened to the perp.

The government might want to start a process whereby each plot of land has one only owner and that is the one held by a central registry. There are too many violent disputes over land. I have lived in several place and nowhere has any ambiguity over who owns what piece of land. Knowing who owns the land is the start of civilisation.

What a bizarre, baiting comment; I was replying to your comment that said, and I quote: “So, where is the outrage, I think we know the reason” …. please point out where in my comment I claimed that my wife and I are the wider community ?

I also note that you have not expressed any outrage yourself, despite expecting everyone else to so do……

So, just where is your outrage, a few words on here, replying to my comment,  doesn't look like outrage.

You seem to have a few issues, one of which is clearly comprehension of words written in the English language. The poster you replied to simply said “seems many of us on this site are outraged” and you replied by saying “Oh dear, you are NOT the wider thai community... geez”

If you had the ability to comprehend the English language, you would know that he made no claim whatsoever of being the wider thai (sic) community …. suggest you sort your issues out before commenting again.

Very sad and I hope the authorities are going to put as much effort into this as possible and media outlets with integrity should keep updating on stages of SAD AND GENUINELY HORRIFIC events that happen to locals by locals with more vigor and empathy. This kind of thing is not even that rare and why I don't really want to hear about a Portuguese woman getting her titties out or a Drunken Brit getting into a petty brawl being portrayed as somewhat equal offences and incidences as what was reported here. Those with a soul and conscience would put such articles into a sub section, with main articles such as this getting the attention.

And like the previous poster said,

"Intimidate by shooting at a group of young children??? If intimidation was the intention, he could have shot into the air.

If you are trying to scare people, you shoot into the ground or air, the ground being the only safe method because bullets into the air have to come down somewhere, and people die every year from revelers doing this. And again, you stick up for locals, no matter what they do.
