Why isn't Philippines the upcoming

I have been living some recent years in both Countries.

Philippines have been under Spanish colonization for centuries and -similarly to Indonesia under Dutch colonialism- they did not develop properly unlike the rest of SEA, being more crushed and exploited rather than developed. The Japanese and American did add the cherry on the cake in more recent times.

Furthermore the Country is scattered in thousands of islands and very mountainous, battered by earthquakes and typhoons hence, agriculturally and industrially, more difficult to develop. Thailand is more fertile, flat, stable and peacefully developed into a powerful rice and fruit farming Country since centuries.

People in Thailand also feel themselves profoundly and proudly Thai - one language, one Kingdom, very old traditions. Filipinos until 1900 did not even have a single language.

All this led to very slow development pace, unemployment being still high, double digit in some areas if compared to less then 1% in Thailand which is actually importing labors from neighboring Countries. Manila has been for decades a collector of unemployed desperate people and is now filled by shanty towns (anyone ever heard about HappyLand in Tondo?) around a super wealthy CBDs (Makati and BGC).

I also see Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia much faster in decision making especially on infrastructures - still somehow corrupt (Th and Vn) but with stronger decision making leaders in charge.

PH have a great potential as the Country is super beautiful for tourism, language never a barrier and people are friendly, happy, smart and educated (great Universities there), will surely improve giving some time.

Just to add.

A little discussed story.

Arthur Wellesley long before he became the Duke of Wellington was despatched from India to Penang at the head of a small invasion army/fleet. His mission was to invade the Phillipines and take it from Spain. When the mission was conceived France and Spain were allies in the war against Britain. Before he could leave Penang Spain changed sides and history took a different turn.

On the flipside Raffles of Singapore fame took over Indonesia (key cities) but post the Napoleonic Wars Britain gave it back to the Dutch so Raffles who died almost destitute went and founded Singapore.

Philippines is a step down. The people you hear that like the place are the typical expats I meet in many grungy locations who think they are living in paradise for one reason or another.

I like the PI, been all over SEA and China, can't say I've seen one place that wasn't 'grungy'.

It's what Asia does!

Compared to the way I would be living now if back in the UK, and was previously living as a middle class white guy, all paradise.

PI has particularly nice beaches compared to Thailand, and much cheaper alcohol.

Not to mention almost everyone in PI speaks English.

Would point out 66% of the Thai population don't speak Central Thai as a first language.

I have worked with Filipinos for 17 years and nothing you can say in their defence alters the fact that their spelling and grammar is dreadful.

And, the English there is an abomination.

Even I speak English better than they.

Firstly.. The main reason that the Philipines is so backward is Corruption !!. yes there is corruption in Thailand..but they are only amateurs compared to Thailand. It is so obvious you can see it everywhere.

Whoever liked Thailand 15 years ago will love the Phillipines.

Also, don't forget the other perks the Phillipines has to offer:

- Easy Visa for under 50 yo's

- No Taxes for Aliens

- Christianity

- Good Thai food

- More travel options

- Less prostitution

- natural beaches

The Christian story starts with a virgin giving birth and ends with a guy rising from the dead.

Believing that as a child is understandable.

Believing that as a grown adult is inexplicable.

I wouldn't believe any of this. We have a direct comparison between "Christianity" in the Philippines and Buddhism in Thailand. There's no doubt that Thailand is a safer place to live with far less crime overall.

The misunderstanding comes from thinking that most Filipinos are Christians. They aren't really. Catholicism in the Philippines is a weird mix with animism, the predominant religion before the Spanish arrived. It hasn't gone anywhere. Your average provincial dweller has a strong belief in animal spirits and many claim they talk to them. They never stop talking about "white ladies", lighting candles and praying to spirits.

Thanks - didn't know that Filapinas are also into witchcraft.

Maybe that's why these peoples never develop and their countries stay stuck.

Idk for sure though.

And probably not even taxed in the UK (if that's a thing) because of DTA!

For me it's a step up for the reason I listed.

Try that in downtown Chicago or any other major US town and see if you make it out alive.

* Watching this is funny. It looks like it's occupied completely by children throwing 'gang signs' and having the time of their lives. 😅

I mean, yeah, sure, poor, but it doesn't look like the children are suffering. And if you grow up as a happy child, being bitter of missing out not being able to buy the latest iphone isn't mandatory.

Well we don't have statistics on how many Brits ( because of pension reasons are choosing Philippines)

Everyone has a theory but bottom line is there's no more evidence for the big bang, evolution etc.

than there is for God, garden of eden, virgin birth, coming back from the dead etc.

I believe atheism / 'life is meaningless' etc is just a psychological defence mechanism to the concept of hell.

Also easier for elites to control people who have low standards (feed em gambling, sportsball, high fructose corn syrup & porn etc.)

Your meat suit won't last but maybe your consciousness will.

Obvs I can't prove that though.

Possibly you terminated your education prematurely if you believe this statement to be true.

The Big Bang and evolution are both attested by voluminous evidence, if you are unaware of it that does not mean that it doesn't exist.

Seriously, watch "Cosmos" and you will learn about the evidence and be entertained as well.

You're beginning to sound like that 'Tall John' over on the covid threads with his 18 hours per day "Yes, but the science" BS.

(Thanks for not posting walls of 'evidence' and big text though).

Wonder what his theory is on Filipino dinosaurs is  🤔
