The Department of Medical Sciences has confirmed that the 10-year-old rice from government stocks is safe to eat. The declaration came following tests on the rice samples supplied by the Ministry of Commerce.

 

The department's head, Dr. Yongyos Thammawut, revealed the information on the recent tests conducted on the rice samples. The examination aimed to spot any chemical residues, possible signs of fungal infection and to evaluate rice's nutritional quality. These tests were carried out in top 5 laboratories and ranked third best in Asia.

 

The process included checks for visual and smell irregularities, besides probing for fungal toxins, residues from fumigation, and 250 kinds of agricultural chemicals. Examinations were also done to confirm the absence of heavy metals and analyze the nutritional value of the rice.

 

The results showed no fungal toxins and the heavy metal levels were within safe standards. The nutritional content of the rice didn't vary greatly from the commercial rice sold in the market. Hence, the 10-year-old stock is described as safe for eating.

 

The rice in focus is part of the government's reserve under the rice pledging program. The stock is stored at Poonphol Trading Co., Ltd., and Kittichai Warehouse in Surin Province.

 

Public auctions for the rice may commence this month, with an average price expected to be 18 baht per kilogram.

 

This announcement squashes the social media speculation about the safety of eating rice stored for up to 10 years due to repeated fumigation which turns the rice yellow. The test has verified that the rice is safe for consumption.

This has been running on Thia TV for the past week, and this eveing with the PM looking in on it, they have said it is safe to eat, talk about sell it for 10-17 baht/kg. but as the wife has said and others, the taste has gone, and it will have a Moudy taste to it. no one here will eat it.

Someone said export it, to whom, other countries can read the news and will never buy it.

Like I said before the big livestock feed manufacturing companies will buy it, if the price is right, pigs, poultry, cattle will not be fussy.

If it does get sold there better be excellent tracking of it. Wouldn't want good rice cut with crappy 10 year old garbage rice.

Can someone tell me why the government have rice stored for 10 years,you are supposed to rotate your stock and use the old stock first.

Any tests carried out on the rice are of course carried out independently in a completely transparent manner...

There was some talk in the newspapers ten years ago about a government official being involved in corruption with the rice support scheme (or whatever it is called). This accusation was investigated and just recently the official was found not guilty. Perhaps the rice was evidence in this investigation and could not be disposed of until the final judgment was made.

Am curious why some people think Thais will not buy it. It is very cheap. Market sellers will buy it and never tell you it is 10 years old simply because they can make a large profit. The same way they buy aged meat and use food coloring to make it look fresh. 

I just hope that they label on the bags that this rice is 10 years old so people can make their own choice whether to buy it or not.

And we trust the samples were verified as being the stock piled rice?

I doubt very much if any bag will identify that this is the 10 year old rice... by the time it hits the streets bags will have been switched.

Rice is known to ”preppers” for its long term storability.

Who paid for this "Test Result" ?

It has been usual for the government to provide the lowest quality of rice to prisons. Perhaps the canteen in Parliament should consider this as they have several convicts.

On the plains of hesitation bleach the bones of countless millions, who at the dawn of victory sat down to rest, and resting died. 

 

I know there were alot of dumb factors that went into the decision to warehouse such a massive supply of rice. But, rarely is something that old as good as a fresh product.
