A man from Britain died in a motorbike accident late-night on May 21, 2024, in Pattaya. Witnesses report that he had a dispute with another driver while in a heavy downpour before meeting his untimely demise.

 

At 11:06 PM, police in Nongprue, along with Sawang Boriboon rescuers, received reports about a crash on Soi Map Yai Lia 24 in the Nongprue sub-district of the Banglamung district in the province of Chonburi. They quickly responded to the scene of the accident.

 

On arriving at the location, they discovered the body of the victim on the roadside. Police later publicized the individual as Mr. John William Palmer, a 56-year-old from Britain, next to his badly damaged bronze Honda Air Blade motorcycle. Emergency services at the scene announced Mr. John dead due to severe injuries.

 

As per an eyewitness account by a man named Mr. Panithan, 27, Mr. John appeared to be in a disagreement with another driver, a vendor on a saleng (motorbike with a sidecar), amidst a heavy rain shower. The eyewitness recounted that after the vendor on the saleng bypassed Mr. John's motorbike, Mr. John abruptly lost control and collided with an electricity pole.

 

The police in Nongprue are examining the case and using CCTV from the area to identify the other driver involved in the incident. Mr. John's remains have been moved to Banglamung Hospital, awaiting the arrival of his family.

The deceased what having a disagreement with another rider (on a samlor) while it was raining, and 'after the samlor' passed him, he lost control and collided with an electricity pole ??

 

- Would this mean that they were both riding at speed (relatively at speed) and at the same time they were arguing, and the samlor rider cut him off forcing him off the road ?

It´s amazing that people can´t just stop and have an argument. They need to drive at the same time.

It wasn't like that all all, I'm a personal friend and all I say is search for the CCTV then you will see what happened and the inaccurate reporting.

The un-, or availability of cctv footage will be announced, "after" the surveillance of it.

not surprised at all. all too often these kinds of stories have a shroud of confusion surrounding them.....as they are reported i mean. 

Very difficult to comment on a thread when someone here knows the victim.

 

Best to say, a very sad event, RIP and wish the best to his friends at this time of grief.

Yet another reason to never get on a motorbike in Thailand. I could fill a book with the number of apprehensions to getting on a bike.

Road rage, why are people so angry on our roads. Every day I see an angry foreigner yelling out, blasting his horn aggressively at someone on the roads here in Pattaya. 

 

I give way to everyone, if it's safe to do so, everyone has right of way when I'm on the road. 

 

 

The Brit was probably angry because he was riding his 18 year old scooter. My Air Blade died about 12 years ago.

until another scooter comes out from behind a concrete pillar at sukhumvit and whittaya through a red light. even with a quick reaction time i barely missed the other bike and had a pretty nasty accident.

In Thailand around 20000 people die every year in traffic. And in Sweden a little bit higher than 200 people. That is 100 times higher and Thailand is not 100 times larger than Sweden, only 6.8 times larger.

 

That would mean, there is something else in the minds of Thais, than on the minds of Swedes.

 

If Thailand had better driving and traffic education, the death could ne far less. At the same time traffic accidents are at more than 250k.

 

I don't think Thailand and Thais will ever learn. First the outdated Thai mentality needs to change.

It's not about the size of the country, it's about the  population....

It called Road rage, and that type of behavior has claimed many lives everyday all over the world

mostly due to poor road manners, under the influence and many more reasons...

Scraping around to find a bit of sympathy here. The factual components of the story seem to be :-

 

(1) Not a ‘motorcycle’ but a ‘scooter’, small-wheeled and even more unstable than an actual motorbike.

 

(2) Downpour  

 

(3) Night

 

(4) Chaotic traffic area

 

(5) … and a reasonable assumption … middle-aged Brit on holiday not likely to have any of the riding skills developed by most native Thai or long-term farang residents.

 

(6) Brit on Pattaya holiday? Another reasonable assumption, his blood/alcohol > zero.

 

Add them up and join me in not being surprised.

 

Why bother even posting this?

 

Vain hope that some incoming naive holiday-maker may read this and think 2, 3 or 10 times before electing to drive a scooter in Thailand.

 

If you absolutely MUST experience the delights of scootering here, then load up on your insurance and make sure it’s watertight and you’re fully licensed in your home country and your next-of kin have  sufficient funds to visit and repatriate your remains.
 

Then … try it out for an hour or two  in small village or island, daytime, no rain and sober and maybe go the whole hog with a bit of protection - helmet, long pants, gloves and closed shoes.

 

If the inevitable near-miss that you WILL have in those idyllic conditions doesn’t scare you silly enough then god (who does not exist) help you because you have a death wish.

I'd rather be in a Volvo in Thailand more than a scooter in Sweden
