Senior Police Officer Killed During Hostage Crisis

Featured Replies

“July 21, an incident unfolded late last night in Bangkok's Bang Bon district, resulting in the death of a senior police officer and injuries to another officer during a hostage situation. The suspect,  49 years old, held his own daughter hostage and opened fire on responding officers.

At approximately 23:30 on July 20, Deputy Superintendent Thanyathorn Rasamee from Thakham Police Station received an urgent call regarding an armed man holding a child hostage. Upon arrival at a three-story commercial building in DK Village, Soi 2, officers attempted to intervene but were met with gunfire. Police Lieutenant Colonel Kittichan Chanayaram and Sergeant Major Chaiwat Atsoponwatana were both shot. Lt. Col. Kittichan was critically wounded and later succumbed to his injuries at Saha Vidhaya Mallee Hospital, while Sgt. Maj. Chaiwat sustained injuries from bullet fragments.

Rescue workers from the Bang Bon Emergency Response Unit arrived on the scene to find Lt. Col. Kittichan unconscious and covered in blood with multiple gunshot wounds. Inside the building, the suspect's daughter had been struck in the face with a firearm. She informed authorities that her father possessed four firearms, a .38 caliber, a 9mm, an 11mm, and a shotgun, and had not taken his psychiatric medication for about a year, leading to frequent bouts of erratic behaviour.

About a month ago, police had requested an ambulance to transport him to a psychiatric hospital, but the suspect threatened them with a firearm before eventually agreeing to go.

Police have surrounded the building and are negotiating with the suspect, who continues to fire shots intermittently. The area is cordoned off, and civilians are being kept at a safe distance.

Lt. Col. Kittichan was due to retire next year. The police community and the public mourn the loss of a devoted officer who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.”

Commissioner Thiti Saengsawang of the Metropolitan Police Bureau reported that police are currently managing the situation surrounding a residence where an armed man has been shooting at officers.

At approximately 02:00, Commissioner Thiti provided an update on the standoff, stating that police are in negotiations with the suspect, who is currently located on the mezzanine level of his house. The suspect continues to sporadically fire at the officers, but the police have refrained from returning fire to avoid endangering nearby residents.

“We have not retaliated with gunfire, as we are concerned about the safety of civilians in the surrounding area. We are assessing the situation continuously and are prepared to escalate our tactics gradually if necessary. Our approach remains cautious,” said Commissioner Thiti. He also assured that the family of the late Lt. Col. Kittichon will receive full support and assistance.

Commissioner Thiti revealed that the suspect is known to be an avid gun collector and has undergone firearm training. All firearms in his possession are legally registered. However, it remains unclear whether the suspect has any underlying mental health issues, which will be determined after a thorough examination.”

Don't Bangkok police have any snipers to deal with this issue?

He did murder a cop, he needs to be put down quickly and efficiently.

I am not sure a sniper would be much use in a neighborhood like his one.

Those townhouses (hong taos) have very little open exposure and are made of concrete.

When I lived in one, my primary complaint was the lack of sunlight.

A sniper, in close quarters like that, would have very little chance of acquiring a target.

Especially one who know he wis a target. And with a hostage.

A father keeping his young daughter from leaving is holding her hostage? Who was he holding her hostage from before the police arrived?

When you join the police force you know you become a kind a of a soldier but your enemies are your own

people and citizens you have been sworn to guard, serve and protect as a policeman and at time

those become your worst enemies...

Update from Thai media.

“Special operations officers from the Commando and Arintaraj units reported that the suspect was found dead. Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect took his own life in his mezzanine office to evade arrest.

Authorities are currently conducting a detailed examination to uncover more information regarding the incident.“
