Thalang — On August 3rd, 2024, Phuket Highways Office Chief Yutthana Phitak announced a new underpass project at the Tha Ruea intersection on the Tha Ruea-Mueang Mai road in Thalang.

The 2.38 billion baht project aims to alleviate traffic congestion and improve the area’s landscape, particularly around the Thao Thep Krasattri and Thao Si Sunthon Monument.

The project will require the expropriation of 1,574 square meters of land, including 967 square meters from the Robinson shopping mall corner and 607 square meters from a retail jewelry store. The underpass will feature three lanes beneath the monument, with two outbound lanes on Highway 402. The upper section will remain a two-lane roundabout.

This has been a huge daily issue for the entire area surrounding the roundabout for years. Trafffic gets backed up for like a km each way on the main road. I think the problem is exacerbated by the fact that the faded line markings are mixed up and don't match the lanes on the surrounding roads.

Most Thais seem to have no idea how to use the thing.

The police close it with a gate during the times where it is most needed to function correctly.

Regardless they need a better solution than a roundabout.

I heard somewhere not that long ago that they were reluctant to do this for so long because they don't want to move the statue of the sisters above it for spiritual reasons.

So what kind of solution do you expect, the island is overcrowded and more is still allowed to be added, it will stop sometime.
Incidentally, this is a development that will cause a problem in more places in the world, take Venice, for example, where they initially wanted to charge an entrance fee, or Mallorca, where people are also getting tired of the tourist crowds, and there are many other examples, everyone wants to go on holiday nowadays and all want to go to the same 'beautiful' place, but that is no longer possible.

You've got the wrong roundabout!

So the above ground carriageways will remain a death trap for pedestrians trying to reach Robinson's!

The plans that were announced last year made more sense... But no doubt they'll be be several more dreampt up before a shovel is finally put in ground.

Cherngtalay, Bangtao and Patong need a solution to severe congestion more than Tha Ruea.

Obviously you don't try negotiating the circle during peak hours

The proposal is to close the subway during rain, very cost-saving.

Nah they have a already planned a carriageway above the flood level :giggle: what could possible go wrong with that...:cheesy: it's not like anyone will go over that is it :giggle:
