Chalerm and Wan: The Father-Son Duo Stirring Up Pheu Thai and Thaksin

Veteran politician Chalerm Ubumrung and his son, Wan, are causing quite a buzz in the Pheu Thai Party, reigniting old tensions and creating new headaches for party leaders, including Paetongtarn Shinawatra and her father, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Recently, the 77-year-old Chalerm criticised Thaksin and dared the Pheu Thai Party to expel him, suggesting he would join his son in a new party while retaining his MP seat. This comes after Wan, 49, left Pheu Thai in August to join the coalition partner Palang Pracharath. His departure followed a reprimand from Paetongtarn for meeting a "party rival".

The father-son duo's meeting with Kamronwit Toopkrajang on June 30, a Pheu Thai candidate challenger, sparked speculation that Pheu Thai targeted Chalerm's family to provoke this reaction. As a fiercely protective father, Chalerm has a history of standing up for his children, evident in an incident from October 2000 when he stormed a Bangkok police station to defend his youngest son, Duang.

Chalerm's political journey began in 1983 when he was elected as a Bangkok MP under the Democrat Party. Over the years, he has held numerous key ministerial positions. However, his relationship with Thaksin has seen highs and lows.

Chalerm claims to have aided Thaksin significantly, even managing legal issues for him during his exile.

At a recent press conference, Chalerm hinted at revealing more secrets about Thaksin if Pheu Thai continues to ignore his expulsion request. His son Wan, who lost his bid for re-election in last year's national polls, has also had a turbulent political career, marked by alternations and controversies, reported Thai PBS.

With the political arena in Thailand always dynamic, Chalerm and Wan’s moves will undoubtedly add more twists to Pheu Thai's already complex landscape. Their actions have the potential to impact not just party dynamics but also broader political alliances in the country.

Which of his sons was it that shot the off-duty Policeman in the nightclub in RCA again? I can never remember.

I can only imagine that Chalerm wrote this or he was sat breathing down the neck of the author.

You would have no idea, reading it, that the man and his sons are the scum of the Earth.....to put it mildly.

A blatant head shot murder in a packed nightclub, yet his son is innocent! No matter ones political persuasion, convictions never eventuate...even these dolts are classed as elites!

This guy is obviously a lowlife, as is a lot of his family, but having said that I love the fact that someone is bringing PT headaches. It's a good thing after they stole the election from the people, they should be criticized, and given as many headaches as possible!

Imagine the old idiots would destroy each other.

I guess it won't happen, but I like the idea.

Irony of ironies, he was given a job at the Police Shooting Range. Obviously pre-qualified!  🙂

Judging from the picture Chalerm seems to have possibly a major health problem. What beats me is, why are such crooks voted back into office over and over and over again?

A despicable man and family, but if he ruffles a few feathers than good.

Ah Chalerm, for years I've missed this guy and the headlines he created, always good entertainment... Here is to hoping he's just warming up. Bring it, Chalerm!

There used to be rumours that Chalerm has a lot of criminal evidence about politicians and policemen that he keeps in a safe as "pressure" not to do anything rash to him or his family. Rather believable.

But they have the number one qualification, money...

These godfather type folks are very popular in their own constituency. They run it like their little fiefdom.

Dude better chill, or he will be sleeping with the fishes, to continue the Godfather references.

His time has come and gone.

First he dares them to expel him, then he says he will reveal secrets if they ignore his expulsion request.

Can't he just resign?
