Illegal Work: Russian Employer and Russian Electrician Arrested

Tourist Police, led by Pol. Lt. Gen. Saksira Phueak-aom, have apprehended two Russian nationals on Koh Phangan for illegal employment practices. This action underscores the authorities' commitment to addressing unlawful foreign labour as the tourist season approaches.

 

The arrests were made on September 13, 2024, at Café 13 in Village 1, Koh Phangan Subdistrict, Koh Phangan District, Surat Thani Province.

 

1. Mr. Anatolii F., 40, was arrested for employing a foreigner without the necessary work permit.

 

2. Mr. Evgenii M., 35, an electrician, was caught with various tools, including a wire cutter, VAF 2×2.5 electrical wire, an electric drill, pliers, and a screwdriver, and was charged with working without a valid permit.

Mr. Anatolii admitted to hiring Mr. Evgenii due to the latter's financial difficulties. Mr. Evgenii arrived on Koh Phangan for a holiday and spent his money on food and leisure activities. Desperate for funds, he approached Mr. Anatolii at Café 13 for work in exchange for money and food. Mr. Anatolii agreed, providing Mr. Evgenii with daily compensation.

The arrests were a coordinated effort by the Tourist Police Division 5, Sub-Division 2, Division 3, the Koh Phangan district chief, and the local police. Both individuals were transported to Koh Phangan Police Station for further legal proceedings.

 

Pol. Lt. Gen. Saksira Phueak-aom has directed tourist police in key destinations to heighten efforts against criminal activities by foreign nationals. The objective is to uphold the law stringently and enhance the safety and confidence of tourists, especially during the high season. This initiative aims to preserve Thailand's reputation as a safe and welcoming destination.

 

This incident highlights the importance of adhering to local laws and regulations for foreign nationals working or seeking employment in the country. The Tourist Police remain vigilant in their efforts to ensure legal compliance and maintain public order.

However those "electricians" suxx~! A couple of "freelancers" were installing "bad ass" sound system in broad daylight in the disco bar at Koh Panghan while local [thai competitors] were watching. Only one (1) call would bring wrath of tourist police on their heads, yet they didn't mind half a mil amps and drivers (speakers).

I sympathize. Many years ago, a person was electrocuted  outside the former shopping plaza on Bangla Road. The wiring had not been grounded and the poor kid was electrocuted as he sat and inadvertently  touched a metal socket. And and on the stories go.  I liek to bash the Russians as much as the next person, but on this, I am understanding.

The employer probably wasn't even looking for help but the fella was in a jam and needed help. Is this really a crime? "No good deed goes unpunished...". 😢  I would bet his work is much better quality then the "We dont need no stinking Code" Thai electricians...

The rant goes on - this week starts with electricians from Russia. 

Well, they should have gone for a company and work permit; I've been using a Swiss electrician for more than a decade - he is legally employed with visa, work permit et al. His invoices are quite a bit higher than the local Somchai next door for good reason.

Most Thai electricians are "challenged" with their assignments - to put it mildly. I had a house rewired with the result, that one room had all green wires, the next room all yellow wires coming out of pipes and sockets; in addition to the colour ignorance the individual cable diameter was absolutely irrelevant to "Somchai the electrician". 

Same applies to plumbers, the law of communicating pipes is literally unknown here and results in blocked drainage before you shower properly, overflowing toilets and dripping cold water outlets. Warm water outlets don't work quite often as the pressure is insufficient - see communicating pipes - despite a perfectly able and strong pump. 

So yeah, the Russians could sit on a gold mine. Get them fined for this illegality and hopefully they will resort to a company and work permits as Thailand certainly could use good workers for years to come!

Maybe the BiB should set up a sting operation outside Global/DoHome/Mega and the like. 

 

Bound to get heaps of foreigners going to their vehicles carrying tools. These tools could be used for jobs reserved for Thais!  

 

Unbelievable.  I use to help my missus run her guesthouse.  General maintenance.... plumbing, small electrical repairs and general upkeep.
