I'm guessing they are female to male transgender.

Usually, when they speak of transgender monks in Thailand it tends to be more like this:

A transgender monk, hallucinating after using crystal meth, wandered around the temple, creating confusion and refusing a drug test. The monk claimed he wanted to testify in court and avoided the test for over three hours. Finally, a urine test showed positive results for drugs, leading to a chaotic disrobing.

They really should reconsider who they choose to wear saffron.

Why wasn't the Temple Abbott able to manage this situation without the involvement of the police ?

Maybe too pissed or high ?

Yes, there should be some kind of competency test.  but unfortunately temples will take almost anyone, mainly because when they ordain, there's normally a huge party thrown by the relatives that bring in mucho money for the temple.

Well to their credit they usually take the robes off them when wrongdoing is proven.....but on occasion the whole barrel is spoiled.

I have 2 brother in laws monks, the eldest one is 64 yo and is a bit of a down and outer so at least he has friends and people to take care of him. The other one is 55 yo and only went to Buddha after his girl friend died. Her father demanded that my brother in law must go to Buddha even though he gave up a lucrative business to do so. The whole charade is corrupt and the senior monks live lives that are simply beyond their means. To my way of thinking many monks are no better than 20 baht toe rags. By the way if you ever get a chance listen to the Dali Lamas take on Thai Buddhism. When asked about his views on Thai Buddhism he politely replied " next question please".

When I was a monk at a temple in Lopburi, we monks lived in simple concrete one room huts with a bath attached at the rear.  The abbot and his right hand man lived in beautiful dwellings with at least 3 rooms.  Tile floors and even a kitchenette, I always thought that was a little much..
