Not trying to defend her just pointing out   Kleptomania is a recognized mental health disorder. It causes people to feel an irresistible urge to steal things even if they do not need them.  Authority  need to check her records

They had a quick check of her records/CDs/MiniDisc/MP3 stick and they've all disappeared...

Is this a sign of the times or just progress?

She is not particularly Brit, rather luk-kruang Thai-Brit.

Looking down on thais as untermensch and behaving accordingly.

According to the store employees, the woman appeared suspicious as she picked up a 700 baht skin care product and left the store without paying. The staff followed her and requested a receipt for the item, which she could not provide

Stupid girl.

Lesson for people that don't want or throw away the paper receipt. If wrongly accused of stealing something, a paper receipt easily proves that one did buy the item.

I'm aware that many are all electronic, but I don't know how that would work in the event of an accusation, as I have never and hopefully never will go down that road.

Something she could have done in home, instead of travelling to Thailand to steal cosmetics.

They do it at home everyday. At least, in the States, it's a major issue for retailers, and they are mostly not confronted by staff for fear of being attacked, or because they've not incentive to do so.

Why?

This ain't Kansas Dorothy where stealing under certain $ amount of goods the police aren't called and they are given a free pass.

For some un-woke reason here you are expected to pay.

I am sure the Thai prison guards will find that very interesting.

And I am sure they will not give a <deleted> about any records. They just move on and forget.
