A British woman, 18, was apprehended by staff at a cosmetics store in a popular Ladprao mall for allegedly shoplifting a branded skincare cream. Police are investigating the incident, but the woman has denied the accusations.

The incident occurred around 21.50 on October 12, 2024. Phahonyothin Police Station officers, led by Pol. Lt. Col. Kachakorn Saisasawat and Pol. Lt. Col. Nattawit Wasikanon, were alerted to a theft at a well-known department store in the Chatuchak area. Upon arrival, they found the store’s staff holding the suspect, who had been accused of taking a skincare product without paying.

According to the store employees, the woman appeared suspicious as she picked up a 700 baht skin care product and left the store without paying. The staff followed her and requested a receipt for the item, which she could not provide. She was then taken to a private area in the store, where police were called to the scene.

Although the woman denied any wrongdoing, she was taken to Phahonyothin Police Station for further questioning. Officers informed her of the charges and her legal rights. The case is now in the hands of investigators, who will determine the next steps based on the evidence provided.

For some, shoplifting is just getting something for nothing, for some it's an obsessive sickness.  The now deceased wife of a billionaire NFL team owner was one.  The team owner and his company had a charge account with a taxi company I worked for.  We would get called to his home: ."See the maid."

The maid would hand us shopping bags from the best stores in town: Saks, Bloomingdales, Talbots, etc. which were filled with clothes with tags still attached.  We'd always go directly to the store manager who would check the contents, sign the invoice.  The family's wealth and prestige saved them from any bad publicity.  Every time the wife would enter a store, she'd be followed and an inventory would be kept of whatever she stuffed under her coat.  The store would call the husband who would direct the maid to pack the booty back up and we'd be called to take it back, usually about once or twice a month.

I hope they make an example out of her.  Big fine and deportation with a red stamp in her passport. Dumb ass.

They should have just charged her double the price. No need to bring it back. Win/win.

Not trying to defend her just pointing out   Kleptomania is a recognized mental health disorder. It causes people to feel an irresistible urge to steal things even if they do not need them.  Authority  need to check her records

I am sure the Thai prison guards will find that very interesting.

They had a quick check of her records/CDs/MiniDisc/MP3 stick and they've all disappeared...

Is this a sign of the times or just progress?

She is not particularly Brit, rather luk-kruang Thai-Brit.

Looking down on thais as untermensch and behaving accordingly.

Oh come on.. at most she will have to pay a fine to the police and pay for the product she stole. Then possibly deported. It is not a crime worthy of jail time as you all seem to suggest.

More likely because she had gotten away with thieving in UK shops that she felt she could do the same anywhere.

Too bad she wasn't visiting Singapore.

Lesson for people that don't want or throw away the paper receipt. If wrongly accused of stealing something, a paper receipt easily proves that one did buy the item.

I'm aware that many are all electronic, but I don't know how that would work in the event of an accusation, as I have never and hopefully never will go down that road.

This generation of 18-30 year olds have a sense of entitlement and arrogance all over the world.

They do it at home everyday. At least, in the States, it's a major issue for retailers, and they are mostly not confronted by staff for fear of being attacked, or because they've not incentive to do so.

In any case in the west the shop

staff have no legal right to detain or touch the customer and the larger stores reinforce that policy, frightened of being sued. Of course that means if you’re brazen you get away with it. The cops end up with the video and maybe, it’s a long shot, they might decide something but the loss will never be recouped. I have a guess that’s how she rolls at home.

This ain't Kansas Dorothy where stealing under certain $ amount of goods the police aren't called and they are given a free pass.

For some un-woke reason here you are expected to pay.

Six months in Thai prison then deportation should wake her entitled ass up.
