It's probably you. Tens of thousands of people did attend, time and time again. Did you go to the free Kenny G concert? It was better than I expected.

Sounds like a problem of your own making.

Everything is ultimately "you", not "me".

The wild card is the people. Take people out and it's mostly just landscape. It's not "just me".

I don't like being around Thai people much, so that made me not enjoy Pattaya. Relocate me to New York and it becomes Ok.

The other wild card is money. Can afford to relocate or not?

That makes Pattaya a net negative for me, not you. You are playing "word salad" with me here. Nothing I say is true for everybody. Also, I don't like Kenny G. I'm into hard metal, so that concert worked for you, not me.

What are you into? You've never been there, but seem to think you know everything about it.

Read all the replies, from others to mine, then my replies, then you can decipher what mine meant. I'm sure others haven't been to Pattaya, yet can comment because people they know have, and the hundreds of comments on this forum shows more what goes on there. Where do I seem to think I know everything about Pattaya from my reply?

So you've just confirmed that the problem is you, why did we need the word salad? I went there with German and Russian friends. You came to Thailand but don't like Thai people 😊

All just confirming that the problems are all yours. You tried to make it sound as if the problem was Pattaya.

I used to go there a couple of times a year and I had a ball.

Before Pattaya it was Phuket which I grew out off after a few years.

World class? no I doubt it but Thailand is what it is.

Beaches ain't flash but the tourist attractions like night life, pussy and cheep smokes is fair, far better places in Australia for sight seeing but Aus in not for the budget conscious.

Not been to Pattaya for five years as I prefer the quiet life upcountry.

Yes, you are right.

Two Travellers and the Monk is a great story which highlights the importance of choosing your outlook or expectations…

http://firewalkhq.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Travellers-1024x683.jpg

One day a Traveller was walking along a road on his journey from one village to another.  As he walked he noticed a Monk tending the ground in the fields beside the road.  The Monk said “Good Day” to the Traveller, and the Traveller nodded to the Monk.  The Traveller then turned to the Monk and said “Excuse me, do you mind if I ask you a Question?”.

“Not at all,” replied the Monk.

“I am travelling from the village in the mountains to the village in the valley and I was wondering if you knew what it is like in the village in the valley?”

“Tell me,” said the Monk, “what was your experience of the village in the mountains?”

“Dreadful,” replied the Traveller, “to be honest, I am glad to be away from there.  I found the people most unwelcoming. When I first arrived I was greeted coldly.  I was never made to feel part of the village no matter how hard I tried.  The villagers keep very much to themselves, they don’t take kindly to strangers.  So tell me, what can I expect in the village in the valley?”

“I am sorry to tell you,” said the Monk, “but I think your experience will be much the same there”.

The traveller hung his head despondently and walked on.

A while later another Traveller was journeying down the same road and he also came upon the Monk.

“I’m going to the village in the valley,” said the second Traveller, “do you know what it is like?”

“I do,” replied the Monk “but first tell me – where have you come from?”

“I’ve come from the village in the mountains.”

“And how was that?”, asked the Monk.

“It was a wonderful experience. I would have stayed if I could but I am committed to travelling on. I felt as though I was a member of the family in the village.  The Elders gave me much advice, the Children laughed and joked with me and people were generally kind and generous.  I am sad to have left there.  It will always hold special memories for me.  And what of the village in the valley?”, he asked again.

“I think you will find it much the same”, replied the Monk, “good day to you”.

“Good day and thank you,” the Traveller replied, smiled, and journeyed on.

Pattaya is very similar to Atlantic City, NJ in the USA if you're familiar with that. Kind of a low budget vacation destination. It does not qualify in my mind as a resort.

Hmm, I am inclined to say Pattaya is like nowhere else on Earth!

Some twenty or so properties bought and sold later, thank goodness I didn't listen to this bad advice regarding buying property.  Pattaya has been very good to me and my spouse.

Pattaya is not a 'resort', world-class or otherwise.   It is a large and diverse city by the ocean that attracts both visitors to its attractions and a large, growing population of locals and expats who make it their home.  It does offer a variety of beaches, island trips, scuba and snorkeling, a number of nice family resorts such as Centara and Centre Point Space, interesting shopping such as Terminal 21, several nice water parks, Universal Studios amusement park, and other attractions such as the aquarium and Nong Nooch Gardens.

It definitely has more on offer now to visitors and residents than it did when I arrived in 2010, including a number of very nice hotels that have been built, as well as a great deal of new retail, several new hospitals, and lots of new housing all over the city.   And, more changes to come, with the large tract of land across from T21 being bulldozed and redeveloped.  Plus, the massive Centre Point 3 resort now going up on a huge land plot in front of Cape Dara.   Although Pattaya is a nice place to visit, as I've said many times it is an even better place to live year-round.

Most of the negative comments are from people who have not ever set foot in the place, but sit in front of their keyboards doing 'research' or who barely moved from the congested centre.

I have been to Pattaya probably 50 times because it is close to Bangkok, has good food choices and (at least in the past) good hotels are a very good value. Now I go to Sri Racha for the same as it is closer and the town is developing fast.

It is not a world class resort. Does that offend you?

I don't care either way. I used to go to Sri Racha to eat sushi at Anego.

but it seems to hold an enduring fascination for those that don't live there. Weird.

Not weird at all. Women rule the world.  That "axe wound" (as Brits call it?) has magic power.

Absolutely true.  Or, they were last here 10 or 20 years ago--I think for one recent poster it was 30 years.
