It must be nearly a year now that we were told that the import duty on imported wines and alcohol was going to be reduced by 50% - and taxes reduced as well! What happened? It would appear - NOTHING!

As quake has said many people don't  finish work till 2.00 am. Pre covid there was a bar in my soi in Pattaya that filled up after 2.00 am with staff from other bars. No noise or nuisance either. Sometimes the Thai way makes sense.

You mean another promise to do something and in reality, do nothing?

 

The "tourism" should have said - "OK you're going to reduce import tax on wine and spirits by 50%. When you have done that, and the shelf prices go down by a similar amount, I will extend my holiday by 50% to match it!" 

Maybe it's a case of "here comes the new boss - same as the old boss" By which I mean that the promise was made by a previous PM/Party, so the current one will say "Nothing to do with me!" (We're enduring that in the UK just now!) 

 

Just as a matter of interest, I wonder if any reference will be made to taxation and import duty in the new "Alcohol Control Bill"! 🙂 I somehow doubt it as the main point of the exercise seems to be:- 

".......... the authority to determine zoning areas and establish tailored regulations."

And,  "alcohol prevention among youth remains a focal point."

 

You never know, they might decide to scrap the ban on purachasing alcohol at Tesco or Macro between 2pm and 5pm in my neck of the woods as it is a tourist area and they want to look after us , don't they? 😉

Oh, it does exist in Phuket. They rarely check restaurants or bars though but I know a bar in Rawai that got busted about 2 years ago

The "Middle Path" of amalgamating five differing views will undoubtedly end up with a bill that serves no one.

Localizing control could increase corruption and might cause local feuds to rise while the "No To Booze" brigade offering will no doubt be bad for tourism.

The problem is without the help of a very rare commodity in Thailand, common sense, it is unlikely we will see anything change except higher taxation to pay off that PTP 10,000 baht election bribe.

The challenge for a lot of people is that the law seems to be 2 separate laws

 

There is the Thai law and then there is the we want tourism law.

 

Thai law is established in areas with predominantly Thai people. Patpong is in the SalaDeng Silom area, so it is deemed to be a Thai working area.

 

Yes, I know there are many businesses around Suk, but it is predominantly a tourist-rich area, and businesses there are more dependent on tourists than Thais.

 

Even in NANA, you have to take into consideration when and what the tourists want. Hence you have a lot of the bars on the street open early, but the Plaxa itself, due to the clientele, is not open until after 5 at the earliest.

 

Cowboy, the bars are open earlier, but the actual girls and goings-on are not until later.

 

The challenge outside the city is that most Thais drive or ride to the bar to drink. That is where the issue arises.  

I actually think that the hours work,  In a strange way because if youwant a beer there are places that are selling or you just have to go to 7/11 Lotus or tops when it is legal buy your poison and go home and drink it.

 

What throws me for a loop is watching people in the middle of the day walking along the street with a big bottle of CHANG in their hands.  

Someone, please tell me a country where this is legal.
