Rwanda Deportation Scheme: £50 Million Spent on Flights That Never Took Off

The Conservative government spent a staggering £50 million on flights intended for deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda, despite no flights ever leaving the ground. This expenditure was part of a broader £715 million invested over two years to implement the controversial Rwanda asylum scheme, according to newly released Home Office documents. The scheme was ultimately dismantled by the Labour government following its election victory in July.

The £50 million cost encompassed preparations such as securing flights, hiring escorts to transport migrants, and ensuring airfield readiness. Additionally, £290 million was paid directly to Rwanda’s government, £95 million was spent on constructing detention and reception centers, and £280 million covered IT, staffing, and legal fees.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper disclosed the figures in a statement to the House of Commons, highlighting the ineffectiveness of the scheme. “This so-called deterrent did not result in a single deportation or stop a single boat crossing the Channel,” she remarked. “For the British taxpayer, it was a grotesque waste of money.”

The scheme, initiated by Boris Johnson in April 2022, aimed to deter migrants from making dangerous small-boat crossings across the English Channel. Under the plan, individuals arriving via such means would face deportation to Rwanda, a landlocked country in East Africa. Proponents argued the initiative would discourage illegal crossings. However, critics questioned the evidence supporting this claim, and the scheme became mired in legal challenges and widespread controversy.

By the time Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer assumed office, the scheme had yet to see a single deportation. Starmer swiftly terminated the project, reallocating its funds to establish a new Border Security Command. This initiative focuses on dismantling criminal people-smuggling operations.

Despite Labour’s policy shift, small-boat crossings have continued. Since Starmer's government took power, more than 20,000 people have crossed the Channel, contributing to a year-to-date total of 33,684 crossings. This surpasses figures from the same periods in previous years, with a 19% increase compared to 2023 and more than double the crossings recorded in 2021.

Labour officials have pointed to factors such as unseasonably favorable weather conditions over the summer to explain the rising numbers. Meanwhile, the broader issue of migration remains a complex challenge for the government as it seeks to implement more effective and humane border policies.

It's also funny how one group sabotages a plan, then blames the other guys for the plan going tits up.

Absolutely, spot on.

Only because the do-gooder lefties stopped it with lawfare.

50 Million is peanuts compared to the 11 Billion Labour are pledging in overseas aid for the "climate emergency".

How long before Labour actually start looking forward, and at their own ineptness instead of harping on about the conservatives all the time? It's pathetic.

Jonny the only way a legal challenge can succeed is if the policy being challenged breaks the existing laws.

But are currently scamming the tax payer of 18 million a day to house the illegals they just let come into the country. Starmer promised to go after the smuggling gangs, how is that working out?

There was, by example, the PPE scam was another plundering of the public purse to direct money into the pockets of Troy Government chums.

The Rwanda plan was not a scam, it was a deterrent.

Also, it would be much cheaper and more effective than putting up illegals in hotels and giving them handouts.

Now the solution will be turning back the boats, with forced deportations and repatriations, which will be a lot messier.

They aren't staying, and populations of ethnic minorities that have not integrated into British society will be forcibly repatriated.

It is inevitable.

The Tories managed to spend £700,000,000 on the Rwanda plant to remove 4 individuals who volunteered to accept the deal the Tory Gove Offered them.

£175,000,000 per ‘voluntarily’ deported migrant.

Labour stopped it working in the first place.

Now they are bemoaning what a failure it was and blaming it on The Tories, like they always do.

They are fooling nobody and neither are you.

How did Labour stop the policies of a Tory Government that had an unassailable majority in Parliament?

Go on Jonny, give it your best go.

A whole £50 million, wow.

That is about 4 days worth of hotel accomodation, not counting the Approx 20,000 that have arrived since the GE.

Since the GE, Labour have paid up to £3000 per person to bribe 600 Brazilian and 49 African, visa overstayers to return home.

Why they were not rounded up and forcefully repatriate is something only known to Labour.

Can soneone remind me how much Thailand pays overstayers to return home 😀😀

Even if that £3000/person is true, it’s vastly cheaper than the £175,000,000 per person the Tories spent.

I thought that Labour opposed deportations .

Labour have deported 10 000 people since the elections .

I am warming to the Labour Party .

600 Brazilians including 106 children have been secretly sent back to Brazil .

Labour might even get my vote in the next election if they keep up the good work

How do you work that out, when another 20,000 have arrived since Labour scrapped the Rwanda scheme.

The cost is ongoing and unknown.

Not just in Monetary terms, crime, rape, murders.

Every single one of the ' Illegals welcome ' crew have blood on their hands. I hope you are all proud.

I worked it out by dividing the number of migrant who volunteered to removed to Rwanda under the Tory Government’s Rwanda scheme by the cost of that scheme.

£700,000,000 / 4 = £175,000,000 per person.

Has Labour now stopped the boats, I mean, they have had years to plan for it, or has the focus been shifted to attack the pensioners and farmers, and soon the bereaved........?

I also notice that your leader, who has lied himself into the big chair, has had a change of personality, his true roots are coming to the fore...

Something for you to comment on below........🤭

(PS. Don't come back and say it is not your Party).........😂

Labour did not oppose deportations, they opposed the immensely costly, ineffective and illegal Rwanda scheme.

Labour getting g the job done without recourse to performative cruelty, stoking racism or stuffing wads of cash into the chums of Government ministers.

Glad to see at least one member hear recognizing the positive achievements of this Labour Government.
