The problem is the 8 Changs

  • Stop thinking about it and get out and make a bunch more friends. Most everyone in my past are dead, but I will tenaciously keep moving forward until I’m dead.

And then what...?

As we age, making new friends is not an easy task.

In fact,  one need to be wary of some people, who become friends easily.

Alcohol with emotive music while dwelling on the past and lost loved ones never helps. Impossible to forget them or misdoings, but you’ll find no salvation there and should try to be grounded in the present as much as possible. It could be a lot worse… imagine losing your entire family in a war zone.

I am only 60, but I'd say at least 50% of the people and family I grew up with are dead.

If a youngster asked me what is the worst part of growing old ? I would say death. But it's not my own death I fear or am saddened about its the death of everything around me. Death of anything is rare in your youth and then speeds up and slows again as most is nearly all gone.

I am listening to songs that are mostly sung by dead people (especially as my now punk generation stars are popping off), I am sad that all the comedy programs I watched are now full of the dead, I now go go wiki to see who is still alive from a movie I have just watched. My sports stars from my youth are playing on ghostly pitches now.

So, I too (many times) after a beer am saddened by death around me - but never my own. There is always a new tv series or film or song to look forwards to,  I would never pop myself off, there is always too much to look forwards to in life - even if most of it is behind you.

I have a nice family here in Pattaya now, a good wife and a lovely daughter, but I grew up as an only chi;ld and my parents died early in my life - I am used to being on my own, maybe a lonely one child family actually prepares you for old age more !

I thought you claimed the other day you weren't an alcoholic? I also recall a picture you posted some time ago, where it showed maybe 30 empty chang bottles in a corner of the room.

Maybe time to get a life now everyone has died.

thanks for reminding me I have to cash those empty bottles in

Death is inevitable and just a question of when.

My father died 6 months ago 10 days from his 95th birthday and set me thinking “ when will i want to go ? “Well my father was in a care home since 2018 but tbh he should have been there 3 years previous, we persevered with cleaners and carers but 24 hrs care was really the best thing for him .

So, going by this reckoning 85 years old would be the time to leave !!

On the other hand i hear occasionally of friends and colleagues who don’t make it to 60 and i feel saddened that they didn’t get to spend any quality retirement time with their families and loved ones.

One particular long time friend and colleague was living a great life in Pattaya with his wife and son, took a contract job in Germany for a couple of months during Covid, fell ill ( not covid related ) and never returned home, died alone in a German hospital. Wife, son and U.K. relatives couldn’t visit him due to restrictions and his funeral ( body eventually repatriated to Thailand ) was more frequented by Zoom viewers than actual attendees.

Now that was sad.

At age 63 I have had 9 years of retirement and am thankful for the peace and tranquility of these winding down years. Many friends and family have gone but i, like the op, am still here so there is that !

Common warning signs are they don’t answer the phone ,then their house is sold and the phones are disconnected so you know it’s bad news, you recall they had a bad memory and kept  saying ,,”now what was I saying ?”

Most of my foreign friends that I met in Thailand over the years are dead....

Suicide, motorbike accidents, diabetes, cirrosis took them, and none of them were that old.
