Belgian 80, Attacked and Robbed by Teenage Gang on Christmas Day in Pattaya

If you walk down  Beach Road in Pattaya you can see an almost daily even in front of the Thai police station by Central Festival.  The police are hard at work stopping every motorbike driven by a farang while stopping no bikes

driven by Thai's. So, we know that the police here are good at targeted enforcement. They attack farang with official uniforms, the rule of law and ticket books. The only difference between this daily mugging by the police and the poor 80 year old bleeding from knife wounds is the knives. The mugging has the same effect. Farang are relived of their cash.

Don't believe me?  Take a walk on the beach and see for yourself. Many Thai people and a majority of the police see farang as "Walking ATM's" Welcome to the Land of Smiles.

Out for an intoxicated walk at Midnight?

Am I reading this correctly?

Hmmm.

That doesn't sound wise for an 80 year old.

Truth is if he had taken a taxi or Grab home from his Xmas party we wouldn't be having this discussion now. 😆

Unless of course he had been attacked by the grab rider or taxi driver, in which case we would be having exactly this discussion.  Or maybe he might have had a motorbike crash or car crash. We know how safe Thai roads are.

it should be safe to walk home minding your own business at midnight. The discussion should be on how to make it safe and the first step is catching these particular 6 thugs.

The answer is, no they don't.

The majority of Thai mwn don't do that.

A very small minority of Thai's do, and that is usually blown way out of proportion by the press and the social media.

How do u know this?

A small minority in this case was six individuals running around with a huge knife. You don't think that if the same thing happened to an elderly Thai man it would hit the press? It's good to know about these things so others can be cautious and keep an eye open.

Family friendly environment such as that will attract only more people of the same characteristics as the bike gang.

This seems to answer the question put on here earlier this week.."Do Thai's attack foreigners for no reason"?, An 80 year old  Foreign man  against  6 Thai's, I think the answer in this case is , Yes they do

No, the answer is "for money." In this case, they collected 7,000 baht."

Silly old bugger walking home at that time of the night, I'm not saying he deserves it, but eliminate any possibility, why does he need 7000 baht on him?

First lowlife, blame the foreigner comment, well done on being the first.

While the reason is not sane, there is, in fact, a reason for the attack: MONEY.

Could it be that Pattaya is becoming the wrong part of Westernization?  Where the kids that drop out of school suddenly fine out they have o education or skills and turn to gangs and robbery.

That's true Bill, but at 80 years old it is unlikely he will have hospital insurance, I hope that the Pattaya authorities do the decent thing and foot the bill.

Why should the Pattaya Authorities pay his hospital bill? The filthy animals that attacked him should be doing all the paying.

There is something seriously wrong with many of these locals and all you need to do is watch the news for a week or two.  They can be overly aggressive and it doesn't take much to set them off.

Young and old often don't respect others including family, fear the law or the repercussions of their actions.  Add the fact the roads are death traps and it changes the Land of Smiles to something less pleasant very quickly.

IMHO, this is not somewhere you want to be if the economy takes a downturn as crime and violence could make this a very unsafe place to visit or call home,   Time to seriously think of other options and do it sooner rather than later.

And out of the 34 million or so Thai males, why do YOU claim without any back up, that ALL Thai males are doing it.

Prove me wrong.

So six Thai teenagers out of some 34 million Thai men were involved and it made the Thai press.

If it were an elderly Thai it would still have made the Thai press but we may not even hear about it.

What about if it were an alien from Mars. Would that make the news.

The problem with whataboutery is that it is merely speculation and not facts.

Attacks on foreigners like this have been rare in my 20+ years coming to Pattaya but there seems to have been an uptick in them recently.   Maybe one gang gets away with a successful grab, others follow.

In my years here I've never once felt threatened but that doesn't mean it can't still happen, being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Many moons ago (maybe 2003?) when staying in Pattaya several girls warned me to avoid those quiet sois that connect off Beach Rd "the boy hit your head!"  I was hearing this several times a week, I figured there must be something to it.  No great detour in avoiding them.

Fortunately attacks on foreigners like this are still fairly rare, though this does sound like a pretty horrible incident. Six young guys attacking an 80 year old man is about as deplorable as it gets.

We don't know whether or not the police will take any action, but one thing we do know is that Pattaya continues to go downhill, continues to become a lesser version of itself, and continues to become more violent and crime riddled as time goes on.

I'm hopeful that I never have to return to that rather forlorn spot.

I haven't been to Pattaya for more than 10 years, and I doubt that I will ever go again.
