Donald Trump wants to roll back China’s growing footprint in Latin America...

But if, or rather when, the pressure does come bearing down, don’t expect all of Latin America to respond the same way. Instead, be prepared for the region to divide less along ideological lines than geographic ones — into a northern half more tightly welded to Washington and a southern half likely to drift, especially if pushed, towards Beijing.

It's still far from broke. And in the meanwhile South Americans want to expand their trade with China. Even rightwing Milei of Argentina:

Xi Jinping’s ‘strategic patience’ pays off as Argentina's Milei U-turns on China ties

President Javier Milei has surprised everyone by changing his approach to the Asian giant. Jorge Malena, a specialist in contemporary Chinese politics and international relations, explains the “realism and pragmatism” behind the La Libertad Avanza leader’s shift in stance.

Nothing wrong with trade as long as you dont get ripped off. That right wing Milei is doing a great job though far better than the freedom denying murderous Socialists that have so hampered the Southern continent.

But that's not the point.  It's about the weak leverage the U.S. has to compel South American nations to do its bidding re: China.

You don't believe anything said by anyone who disagrees with you, so why bother asking?

LOL, fine, you arent quite as smart as you think you are.

Hey Yanquis, South America is just not that into you. It's understandable. Historically they've been treated very badly and imperialistically. Different more respectful approaches are needed.

It is about trade. What the Latin American countries can buy from the US which they can't buy cheaper or better quality from other countries? Sell them stuff with 60-70% discount and they may bite.

And why would any business  do that? In fact, how could any business afford to do that? You think that government should subsidize those low prices? How would that not result in a boondoggle of massive proportions?

A business would only logically do that to flood a market to gain market share and try to starve out the competition before raising prices. A sleazy business practice but not rare.

How many businesses are strong enough to do that? And how many businesses would be needed to have an effect on the huge scale of trade? It's unworkable. And of course, what would stop the Chinese from doing the same thing?

And if I'm a buyer why would I care what the seller can or can't afford? The Chinese are competitive and sell. Latin America needs a lot of infrastructure as well, the Chinese have mastered this subject. Look at the new port in Peru. I suspect some of the cherries and blueberries in Macro are coming through there.

Big ones.

Ones with government backing.

A common tactic from China.

There's no reason for a buyer to care and every reason for a seller to care.

And there's a lot of stuff the Chinese make that fully developed nations don't. And they can produce their goods more cheaply than can fully developed nations.
