Thaksin Predicts Debt-Free Thailand by 2027 with New Strategies

Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has expressed confidence that Thailand will eliminate its national debt by 2027. Addressing supporters at a rally for the Pheu Thai party's candidate, Salakcharit Tiyapairat, in Chiang Rai's upcoming Provincial Administrative Organisation election, Thaksin outlined his vision for reviving the Thai economy.

 

In his current role as an adviser to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Thaksin aims to boost the price of rubber, which could significantly benefit Thai exports. He also mentioned efforts to break the monopolised export of rice, allowing more Thais to participate directly in the global market.

 

Thaksin emphasised that Pheu Thai intends to capitalise on economic opportunities this year, paving the way for gradually clearing national debts. He stressed that these financial burdens weren't created by Pheu Thai but inherited from previous administrations.

Addressing societal issues, Thaksin highlighted the longstanding problem of drug trafficking among youths and pledged that his daughter, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, would intensify efforts to combat this issue. The plan includes cracking down on influential figures profiting from narcotics.

 

Thaksin also touched on scams originating from call centres in Myanmar's Myawaddy township, near Thailand's Mae Sot border. He is in talks with Myanmar to address these scams, offering Thai assistance if needed, reported Thai Newsroom.

I really do not understand how, after all what he has done - betrayed his people and country, pulling strings while in exile, pathetic and dramatic comeback, hospitalised to avoid jail and and and...

I thought that he was banned from political activities...

But no! His second daughter is now leading the country while the other daughter intends to come back (just like him) from self-imposed exile!!

Thailand WAS the Nr. 1 Rice producer for decades. 

Thailand WAS the Nr. 1 rubber producer...

Other countries took over with more competitive prices so Thailand lost the lead mostly because of the price.

And now the smart Thaksin - who is now even adviser to Malaysian Prime Minister ALSO - wants to boost the price of rubber and break the rice market!!

 

Being here since 35 years, I remember very well how the price of rubber dropped from over 150 Bt./Kg. to less than 45 Bt. because of the competition...

And now, Mr. Iknowbetter still receives applause while talking about HIS DREAMS...

His audience clearly doesn't know since they applaud to a vision WITHOUT asking HOW or IF these goals can be reached!

 

To eliminate the national debt within 2 years with these strategies?

Come on guys!!

Stop listening to this megalomaniac impostor and ban him from politics!!

Plenty of experience with Bangkok being the World's capital for boiler room scammers for over two decades through the 90's and 00's.

It was Thaksin(and successive regime) that promoted the debt-oriented consumption among Thai public while in office.

Encouraging even low-income households to own cars.

As a result, Thai Credit Association issued an warning in 2013: The amount of individual debt was at the alarming level.

A healthy level would be a Debt-to-GDP ratio of no more than 60%, but politicians love spending what isn't theirs, the addiction is alive and well. Thailand is floating around that number now, but it was dramatically lower in previous years.

It all depends what the debt is used for. If debt is used for improving infrastructure, for R&D and other complementing schemes for improving competitiveness then it is a good thing, it would allow the debt to be repaid or its percentage of GDP to be minimized. If however it is used, as is the case in the USA, to pay interest on the preceding debt, causing ever new debt to be raised it is obviously detrimental. I cant see that Thailand has a problem at the present time however looking to the future it could become a problem if, for instance, there was a collapse in tourism due to  worldwide financial instability (which looks ever more likely) or if weather patterns changed so as to make farming ever more nonviable then yes it would make sense to considerably reduce debt now while they can. Despite Thaksin's poor personal reputation I consider him to be a far thinking politician with a keen political instinct.

All politicians are greedy sociopaths but some produce good results for the general population that they despise, if only to enhance their own position. He also promoted Thai nationalism by paying off the IMF loan early, by blaming foreigners for the Thais' very own economic mismanagement which ultimately led to the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997 and a global financial disaster.

 

Of course none of this was their fault as usual and no responsibility was taken. 🧐
