Former PM Thaksin Shinawatra Advocates Legalising Online Gambling in Thailand

In a recent speech in the Mae Chan district, former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra put forward a controversial proposal to legalise online gambling in Thailand. Mr. Thaksin argues that by regulating the activity with strict guidelines, age restrictions, and appropriate taxes, the government could effectively diminish the thriving underground market. It's a bold move aimed at controlling a trend increasingly occupied by approximately 2.5 to 4 million Thai residents on a daily basis.

Currently, online gambling in Thailand operates outside the law, often linked to wider issues such as fake banking accounts and personal data theft. Mr. Thaksin's proposal includes instituting an age limit of 20 years and older for participants and providing medical treatment options for those struggling with addiction.

Support for the proposal has emerged from the Thai government, with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Economy and Society, Mr. Prasert Chantharungthong, recognising the social issues stemming from online gambling. Mr. Prasert noted the potential economic benefits through tax revenue and urged an examination of legal adjustments necessary for regulation.

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society is reportedly working on legislative proposals to bring Mr. Thaksin's vision to fruition. However, Mr. Prasert emphasised that further discussions are required on implementing age restrictions and addiction treatments.

The debate surrounding legalising online gambling touches on broader societal and economic concerns in Thailand. It mirrors efforts in other nations where regulation seeks to curtail illegal operations while generating public revenue. As discussions progress, the Thai government and citizens alike will be watching closely to see how this proposal develops, reported The Pattaya News.

Gambling is a cancer in Thailand, destroying many lives.

Prevention is better than cure.

Slimebag.

He knows full well that gambling addiction is a major problem in Thailand.

This is a bone thrown to his constituents to keep them on-side... just another vote buying scheme.

Once up and running online and if casinos open, the corrupt Shinawatra clan will be stakeholders for sure and happy as pigs in poo.

Which of his friends benefits one wonders?

Good call Khun Thaksin.

A few of Thailand’s neighbours have already legalised casino gambling. It’s time Thailand catch up or risks getting left behind in chasing the tourism dollar.

The poor will continue to gamble their few baht underground as they do now, the rich will gamble in style in the casinos..

Good.

We can start taking bets on AN.

I bet you 2000 baht (ie one short time) that Gamma will start another pointless thread in the next 72 hours.

Any takers?

I think the best way to discourage poorer thais from visiting casinos and betting their lives away would be to charge them a flat entrance fee of 5,000 baht per head...

Farangs should get in free no questions asked with complimentary alcoholic drinks included.

Thaksin sees how much money the heads of the RTP are making from on line gambling and he wants to get  his nose in the money trough. Same with casinos.

Why do they call him "Former" PM?  They should call him the "Real"  PM!

Unfortunately a lot of the new generation(s) gamble online, available 24 hours a day. And many lose not just a few baht but mass large debts, borrowing from relatives and loan sharks.

It's a kind of unseen disease, the gambler doesn't rapidly lose his/ her looks ( until the loan sharks sorts them out), unlike the methamphetamine and serious lao khao consumers who show obvious signs of wear and tear after a while.

As you say online gambling is available 24/7.. no need to go to a casino for the average Joe...

just the Hi-so's will hang-out there to be seen..... mingling with the Chinese and others who want to be noticed.

Come on people. Is anyone really surprised?

His ultimate intention: Destroying this kingdom from within.

To ease the way to takeover by China.

Quite makes sense as a loyal CCP puppet.

Surely it would be easier to BAN online gambling and have it out in the open so 'kids' can be easily recognised. Let's face it, a seven year old can register for Farcebook or similar, so could easily bypass any online age checks.

Turn-key setup of online casino is about $20K. Reg'd at Macao. Some RTP officers own those. Nothing morally wrong about it they think.

And now Mr. square face pitched in? OK.

And it's very possible the same thing would happen here that happened in Cambodia. Massive casinos would be built and the administration would change and the law would change and billions upon billions of dollars would be lost.

if there's anything that can be expected from subsequent administrations here, it is inconsistency with regard to policy.

The Chinese-Thai gangsters and their local henchmen (flour smuggler etc.) will turn this country into a cesspit, unless another coup prevents it.
