the latest new one MHPV or something like it.

It's actually HMPV (Human Metapneumonia Virus) Been around for decades. 1st identified in 2001 and can be traced back to the 70's so it's endemic. Like covid for most people it's a non-severe virus.

Liver and kidney according to the missus. Interestingly there's been quite a lot of diabetes related deaths around the village recently. As for alcohol being a poison, yep. Ethanol is a poison but the liver deals with it. The liver, however, can only do so much hence drinking in moderation. To say even one glass is harmful I guess it is in a way but overall the the liver can handle it. It's when someone drinks too much and/or too constantly that the liver has problems metabolizing ethanol.

Not easy to compare East with West in this regard. Lao kao aside, Thailand's sky high rates of liver cancer often involve history of hepatitis, plus there are dietary factors such as dishes like koi plaa which causes liver flukes.

maybe you can get away with a couple of drinks a week without any negative impact.

or try your luck drinking daily if you're feeling lucky, punk.

I like this famous scene(at the end of the first episode of Dirty Harry19).

Not many lao khao drinkers get old. That shts poison.

It's not the Lao khao per se , it's the quantity they drink. Same as vodka , tequila, gin ,rum etc.

If you hammer any hard alcohol from dusk till dawn you are not long for this earth.

Better to not touch any alcohol or drug at all. Even excessive carpet munching has been found to be detrimental to health.

It's a wonderful  life if you don't  weaken.

you can drink and do drugs as long you have good genes and also have resources. Most people do not have that kind of resources and not able to go to rehab and clean up both body and mind.

It helps to have an passion and a strong mind as well will to live.

Keith Richards, it is a miracle he is still alive, if he is real, and not just an rockn roll actor. Anyway, he is an legend who is still walking and even playing at an age of 81.

His mate Ronnie Wood is not doing to bad either .....he drinks just as much as Keith I beleive? 😆

I like drinking once a week, the guys drinking daily are either alcoholics or pre-alcoholics

Not necessarily. Why label people?  Are people who have sex every day are addicted? I drink water every day. What does that prove? I agree daily is probably unwise, but I don't think Rod is an alcoholic, and at 80, who cares?

Many are in denial, maybe you're pre alcoholic, maybe you're alcoholic, time will tell

The liver is there to flush out toxins. If you drink every day and don't give it time to process the bad stuff it will store the waste as fat causing fatty liver and stressing it, possibly leading to cirrhosis.

If you drink in moderation and abstain for a few days a week it will lessen the chance of damage.

No amount is totally safe but if you choose to drink, moderation is the key and it's crucial to monitor your weekly units if you're serious about controlling your intake.

Drinking every day is a recipe for eventual ill health.

As far as I can tell from his autobiography Keith has never had a job, and he has almost exclusively been a Rolling Stone as far as being a working musician. I know "Sophisticated Winos" a few projects, that's why I said exclusively.

I read a couple of books by and about the Stones a couple years ago and I think one of them said that Keith was committed to being a layabout if he didn't make it as a musician.

According to "Celebrity Net Worth" on the internet he is worth one $500 million.

More power to him, his music has given me a lot of enjoyment over the years.

And what? You come across as very self-righteous and pompous. Nothing worse than a preacher.

I agree three days a week off is wise, but there is NO one way that suits all. Some are genetically stronger than others; some drink beer/wine, not whisky, and some drink plenty of water. MANY variables.

Thank you - I never drink during the daytime, nor every day. Despite your attempts to paint me or anyone else as alcoholic because you feel so smug being teetotal. My father drank daily and died at 92 - Rods Stewart is still a major rock star and is 80. Churchill managed, and won WW2, and drank far too much. You are oversimplifying it to justify your personal choices. Cheers!

Does anyone here over say 60 still drink the night before and have energy the next day ?

What side effects do you get ?

Sure! If you balance your life, why not?  plenty of water helps and sleep of course. There is way too much proselytising on here, IMHO. Do everything in a balanced way - this includes, alcohol, sex, chocolate, driving at speed etc.

I agree on quality, not quantity. Rod Stewart is still going strong and drinks a bottle of wine a day.

Yes, a bottle of red wine a day with my main meal was standard procedure for me, even when I got here 18 years ago, however now I've cut it back to half a bottle per night, followed by a small glass of Portuguese port.

I don't suffer in the morning, and maybe it's to do with my genes because my birth father lived to be 88 years old and was a regular pub goer, and my birth mother 84 or thereabouts.

In summary, I don't see myself giving up the red wine, and try to stick to the quality wines, even though occasionally I will imbibe on one of the cheaper wines if my evening meal is a spicy/Thai/Indian meal.

A little story for you – – around 2002 I did a tour of French vineyards along with a French wine merchant and we were in the cellar, near Beaune, of a wine producer M Bocqanet, tasting some of his wines, and they were delightful. Then an older portly man with the traditional French beret came into the cellar and helped himself to a large glass of wine and lit up a cigarette! When I asked about him, M Bocquanet told me he was his father and at the age of 75 (or was it 78?) was still working in the vineyard and loved his red wine and cigarettes and he looked in "rude health".

I know everyone is different, but that gave me some hope for the future!!!!!

Thank you for sharing. Thousands of years after Jesus turned water into wine, we don't need to worry too much IF we lead a balanced life. Enjoy your wine!  Cheers!
