Wall ventilator fan,do they make a big difference heat wise?

Featured Replies

We have a storage room in the house that gets very hot sometimes. There is no ac or Windows(and dont need also). Thinking about wall ventilator fans, would it make a big difference? One ventilator fan to blow the air out only,or 1 for outside air in also(2 fans total)?

You are planning on cutting holes in the exterior walls?

How many floors is your home, and what floor is the storeroom on?

What kind of ceiling is in the storeroom?

I would probably just go with a louver door.

Thank you for reply.

Yes plan to cut holes, thin blocks.

This room is ground floor,3 walls are to the outside.

Its plasterboard on the ceiling. Block walls.

If that does not keep it as cool as you like, I would install a ceiling fan with a light.

If you already knew, why did you ask?

I meant a louver door to replace the existing door, not a new door to the exterior.

Maybe fit one reversible fan......blowing in, in the 'winter'.....out in the summer???

Is there a ceiling and roof above? can you put in a ceiling extractor fan (heat rises), and/or a wind powered whirlybird extractor

But choose the  wind powered whirlybird extractor carefully, they can be extremely noisy.

Is there an attic? A radiant heat barrier is much more effective than exhausting the hot air. That's the standard construction technique in the hot southern US states now. Also remember if you make holes in the wall you'll let in bugs and potentially rodents.

Yes, it should help.  Where would the 'in' air be coming from ?  You may not want the warm or damp outdoor air displacing what's already there.

We have a storage area that you step 'down' into, from the main house, and we simply leave the doors open, and let the AC naturally flow down into it.   Cools it off enough, as park the ebike in there when not using.

Make sure any fan has screen and or louvered so no critters or insects can get in.  You may even find one (haven't looked for or seen) one that is temp controlled.  Had those back in USA, in attic area.

Ask yourself why this room gets so hot.

Yes, I understand there is a lack of ventilation, but that does not of itself cause heating, but rather an inability to dissipate heat that is provided most likely by the sun.

If there are outside walls facing east or west they will receive sunshine morning and afternoon if there is nothing to provide shade.

If there is an outside wall facing south it will receive sunshine throughout the middle of the day, but to a lesser extent mid-year, depending upon the amount of overhang of the roof.

I reduced heating of a south facing wall by hanging reflective aluminium-foil insulation over the lower part (not shaded by roof overhang); and over that put some of the green shade-netting designed to protect plants.  Not beautiful, but it works and has lasted quite a few years.  Now in need of replacement.
