Trump holds back billions in funding despite court ruling, states tell judge

A federal judge on Thursday said he stood ready to enforce an order he issued blocking President Donald Trump's administration from freezing federal grants, loans and other financial assistance after Democratic-led states said billions of dollars in funding was still being tied up.

U.S. District Judge John McConnell in Providence, Rhode Island, during a virtual court hearing, said state agencies had a "rightful concern" that they were still not able to fully access money nearly a week after he issued his temporary restraining order.

He issued that January 31 order at the behest of Democratic attorneys generals from 22 states and the District of Columbia, determining it was necessary even after the White House's Office of Management and Budget rescinded its wide-ranging directive that had announced the funding freeze.

The Trump administration is withholding funds authorized by Congressed and signed into law by a President. And it'sis now defying the rulings of the courts. So much for the system of checks and balances. And there are some people out there who say that characterizing Trumpism as a kind of fascism is alarmist.

It's weird how you distort the issue.  So where did the Biden Administration defy court orders.  As for those USAID revelations. You seem awfully eager to embrace these releases from partisan sources.

And Biden gave away $billions in student loan forgiveness after the SCOTUS told him not to.

How do the Dems like them apples?

If they don't like what Trump's doing, I suggest they either pound sand or take it up with the voters who elected him.  Better yet, take it up with the Dem Elite who put Harris up against him.

Lefties can always justify why it was okay for Biden to ignore or defy the courts, but not okay for Trump to do it.   MSDNC and Politico are masters at it.  (The USAID revelations explain Politico, eh?)

There are some interesting arguments that have been brewing for quite a while whether district courts should have the power to dictate policy across the entire nation.  Google FRPC if you're interested.  But you may have to hold your nose and look beyond the MSM.

The voters put Trump into office. The office of the President. That office is constrained by the law.

Trump and his regime took office fully intending to break the law. Less than 4 hours after swearing an oath to defend and uphold the Constitution he sat down and signed an executive order which removed a provision of the constitution.

He started as he meant to go on...

You seem awfully eager to embrace these releases from partisan sources. I remember when the House Committee was releasing similar "evidence" about Joe Biden. That all fell apart.

As for whether district courts should have that power...it was right wingers who repeatedly abused that by repeatedly going judge shopping to extreme right wing judges in Texas who repeatedly had their judgements overturned by less nutty conservative judges. I didn't see any condemnation of that kind of judge shopping in right wing circles. On the contrary, their judgements were celebrated.

Why does it have to be new to be relevant?

James Carville.  It's not a crystal ball, looks more like a cue ball.

I got a kick out of his recent warning to the Dems.  Google Level Of Jackassery

By the time the midterms are due, conservative voters will have woken up to the fact that this isn't what they voted for

Boy.  Look who's dusting off the crystal ball.  James Carville is my source.  Yours?

If by conservative voters you mean those who voted for Trump, the evidence shows that they'll follow him pretty much blindly. He did a 170 degree turn on HB-1 visas and, apart from a few like Steven Bannon, got mostly cheers. He proposes getting massively reinivolved in the Middle East and gets applause from them after he campaigned on an America 1st platform.

Unlike you, and apparently, James Carville, I understand that the next elections are almost 2 years away. Let's see how the economy is doing at that time.

On predictions political, I bow to his superior knowledge.  It's a hoot watching him cringe over the state of the DNC.

And the big one: tariffs. He promised to impose them, claimed they could replace the income tax, and, now, apparently, has dropped them on the countries that are the 2nd and 3rd largest exporters to the US. And on the largest, China, he has imposed a mere 10%, a slap on the wrist.

Thanks for that.  After posting the same evidence a dozen times over many threads, I just kind of lost interest in the discussion.

Especially now that I can't figure out how to post a clickable link.

Once again, you forgot the word "additional".  China already gets slapped with special tariffs on (count 'em) 250+ pages of HTS codes.  Look to the US HTS web page.  Take your No-Doz, because it's a lot of detail.

Still, not as much as  the still possible tariffs he may impose on Mexico and Canada

"That came as the U.S.’ average effective tariff rate on Chinese goods rose from 3% in 2018 to about 11% last year, even ahead of the 10 percentage-point additional levy, according to Trade Partnership Worldwide."

To be fair 250 pages is not that much of the tariff schedule. Possibly biased opinion being a former customs broker myself.
