So is the new expiration date 10 years from the date it was issued, or were you given those 2 extra years of validity ?

If you renew early (me) you lose time.

My pp is valid 10yr from date of issue.

Not a big deal in my thinking.

You might be surprised by how many threads we have where folk have simply left it late to renew pp.

Particularly in relation to obtaining new extension

Hopefully in future countries such as USA, UK, Canada etc can do the whole process via mail without need to include current pp in application

Oz already not required to submit existing pp with application.

You can't do it online it's by mail and that's the only way it can be done based on the Bangkok US Embassy website. They're only accepting applications by mail have a look.

  • Yeah, walk ins definitely not available. Even though they say expect 6 to 8 weeks multiple reports say 4 weeks is more typical. HOWEVER, due to the change in the U.S. government many federal

The UK (for example) used to add up to 6 months to the validity when renewing early.  They stopped doing that some years ago.  Some countries have issues with passports with having over 10 years validity and I also had problems booking flights when my passport was valid 10+ years at the time of booking.

Nice surprise this afternoon. Received my new US passport and cancelled old one back via EMS.  It was sent to the US embassy on Feb1, and in only 19 days is completed and back. Damn good job USA, thanks.

And that may be the last one you ever receive, the way things are going in the USG.

I just renewed my passport at the  US Embassy Feb. 5..I had an appointment and on my appointment card it said passport services. I was promptly helped with no wait, the lady who helped me gave me the option of keeping my passport although it would have to be cancelled by punching 2 holes in it and they would mail me a new one that is arranged with the post office on embassy grounds or keep my passport and then mail it in prior to receiving my new passport.   Process was very quick, I paid in Thai baht and now waiting for new passport

I made an appointment online last week and today I went in and dropped off my documents for US passport renewal. The consular staff checked everything for me. Instead of mailing everything in and hoping I did it correctly I prefer to go in person and confirm there are no mistakes.

Do you go back to pick up your new and old passports? Or will they mail these to you?

I had already paid for the Courier Pass Back envelope because that's what is on the check list. The staff I spoke with did say that I had the option of picking it up at American Consular Services. Now I'm waiting for the new passport to be mailed to me hopefully before my visa expires in October.

Recent reports are about a 3 week turnaround time.

Mine was over a month.

Also note the DEEP STAFF CUTS  at the State Department had previously been stalled by court actions but they have now recently actually happened.

That includes embassy staff and in the US.

Therefore it would not be at all surprising if the turnaround times increase.

I had dropped off my passport in person on Monday, July 14 and today Friday, July 18 I received this email. It took the government 4 days just to receive the passport. Yikes.
