The POTUS does have the power to do that.

unfortunately the POTUS has the right to do a lot of stupid things, that right should be removed from him and give it to congress

  • Yes, but didn't Trump say there was absolutely nothing essential to daily life in the USA that needed to be imported?

Current POTUS only has the power to enact tariffs because he declared a bogus wartime Emergency. And even the bogus emergency doesn't give him the power to enact tariffs -- it only specifies embargoes

Fact Sheet: President Donald J. Trump Declares National Emergency to Increase our Competitive Edge, Protect our Sovereignty, and Strengthen our National and Economic Security
The White House
April 2, 2025

Using his IEEPA authority, President Trump will impose a 10% tariff on all countries.
This will take effect April 5, 2025 at 12:01 a.m. EDT.

he knows he can only govern by using executive orders or old wartime emergency , he knows he wouldn't be able to do anything the other way around as congress and/or senate wouldn't support him, mid term elections are coming and he will be impeached again

Trump folded on Chinese tariffs and has now started begging for help. Just like he did in his first term. But he did manage to decimate the dollar and damage it as a reserve currency, making for its devaluation. Mission accomplished there. The man is a yutz.

So everyone bitched & cried about the tariffs when they were put on, he reversed some and 'he caved'... so you want the tariff or not.... or as I expect you will slag him off no matter what he does.

A man shoves an old lady down the stairs. He then helps her up. Should be get blasted for shoving her in the first place or lauded for helping her up?

What do you think, "Frank"?

That was my view at first also but if countries want to negotiate about it in a normal rational way then ok.

There are many tariffs in place all over the world.

I compaired Trumps tariffs some where else as ,burning down your own house as well as that of the neighbors because you have a mouse in the basement.

Not hard to understand why Trump caved.

An iPhone costs $1350 to make. It sells for around $2300. With the tariff, $3500.

America can't make iPhones, labor costs are too high.

Even the dumbest supporter would find it difficult to swallow Trump's evasions.

Like the lawyers that had to agree to perform pro bono work for Trump's favorite causes, these tariffs are a shakedown but aimed at big tech. I wonder what Tim Cook had to promise to get this reprieve.

Trump backpedaling again  as expected. :coffee1:

If you're manufacturing a computer in the US and need to import components from China, you pay 145 percent tariffs on the components. If you manufacture the computer in China, it comes into the US with zero tariffs.

WSJ: Trump’s exemptions for big companies expose the arbitrary political nature of his border taxes.

https://archive.ph/xSTbR#selection-2631.0-2635.116

The Trump exemptions carry several lessons that vindicate tariff critics. One is a rebuttal of the fantasy pitched by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to CBS News that an “army of millions and millions of human beings screwing in little, little screws to make iPhones, that kind of thing is going to come to America” and be automated.
Guess not. As CEOs and these columns have argued, there aren’t nearly enough American workers who could do that work

Hashtag not a single mobile phone is manufactured in USA anymore.

One analyst estimates that on labor wages alone, a U.S.-made iPhone could cost 25% more than they do now. Another analyst pegged the price of a stars-and-stripes iPhone at $3,500.

But many of the components used to make the phones are manufactured in China and then the phones get imported into the USA. So Trump's flip-flop on Chinese tariffs means that they won't be taxed now when American companies like Apple bring their phones with components made in China into the USA to be sold.

He can flip many times over but a lot of the damage is already done. There is an enormous loss of confidence in the current US government.

It seems as if he has now created a new Barnum & Bailey Circus!

Nobody now knows what the US trade policies are, assuming they have any, anymore!

How any business with dealings with the US can make even short term plans, never mind long term ones, during this self inflicted turmoil, is beyond belief.

Apple just started making phones recently in China or ?

But there is still the baseline of 20%, or is it 10% now? It seems even customs aren't sure anymore.

Nobody is sure anymore of what it it will be on Monday's opening hour or closing or any day for as long as Trump is in power!

Ah, so now we've moved off topic, and we are onto playing dumb instead. Nice! You should reply to your own desperate question because you seem to like to reply to your own posts anyway.
