How stupid is China for retaliating to Trumps tariffs?

Featured Replies

Its pretty clear now that all trump wanted to do was put high tariffs on china. If china just had done nothing in response to trumps initial tariffs, maybe trump would have kept it low. But them retaliating only gave trump the excuse he needed to put tariffs on china that price them out of the US  market, losing them the american consumer

China had previously held fire when tariffs were raised by Biden. But Trump couldn't resist pushing the envelope.. As has frequently been noted, 15% of Chinese exports are bound for the USA. And it isn't just exports that China is using as a weapon. As you may recall, it's now withholding vital rare earths from the United States. China also has the advantage of being ruled by a real dictator. No threat to Xi's agenda from midterms. Trump is still only a wannabe dictator.

Which makes it even more embarrassing for china, is trump announced these tariffs way in advance. China had a lot of time to think about it if trump did it, youd think their first priority would be damage control and have the lowest tax possible on their exports but no they did exactly what trump wanted.

all trump wanted was to tax the <deleted> out of chinese goods, if china didnt do anything would trump have kept it low? We will never know

How predictable a cult worshipper could try to put a positive slant on Trump's abject stupidity.

Like everything else, It's not Trumps fault, it can never be Trumps fault, if you're a MAGA bootlicker. China did this to themselves.  If only they had just played along with Trump, this never would have happened. Unfortunately they just behaved like any other country would.

You wonder how long before Trump declares victory and drops the tariffs.  Hopefully someone will talk to, grab a golf cart, go out & have a chat with Trump. The longer he drags it out, the harder it will be, to convince non MAGA types, that he won.

One thing for sure. I’m so glad that the Americans voted for Trump to be President. He is going to do wonders to promote multipolarity and multilateralism and destroy hegemony. That’s the best thing about democracy.

Maybe a more appropriate title for this thread should be”How stupid is Trump for putting tariffs on the world, especially China”.

On the one hand you claim that China did exactly what Trump wanted when it raised tariffs. On the other hand, you say that if China didn't raise taxes we'll never know what Trump would have done. You have a very selective mind reading ability when it comes to Trump.

You clearly show your lack of understanding of tariffs and there impact on the importing country. A tariff isnt a tax on the exporter its a tax on the importer and US consumer. You and trump fail to understand that fact. China has the benefit of the upper hand here as they control they currency and banking and mfr. The damage will be done to the US consumer as such a high volume of goods come from China directly or indirectly. The US is not in a position to start mfr on goods as we have no infrastructure to mfr those goods and it will be a number of years before we do. The US stopped being a mfr based economy decades ago

All Trump wanted to do was to try and bully China (which failed spectacularly). He had a false sense of America’s strength. There is nothing reciprocal about the tariff rates. Either they think that everyone is stupid or they are too stupid themselves to realise the mathematical mistake they were making.

Putting ridiculous tariffs on China would only serve to stop imports. While this would balance out the trade between the two countries, this does nothing to improve America’s situation and as we have seen, is damaging America immensely.

I’m so glad Trump is the President.

Of course you dont.

This thread could have only been started by a major devotee of the fake master. China is in a tremendously advantageous position, they can afford to hold out, America cannot. America needs the rare earth materials, America has invested trillions in manufacturing in China, which controls 95% of the shipping container market and more than 50% of the shipping market worldwide.

The Chinese people are likely far more capable of sacrifice than the American people, who are quite soft and unaccustomed to living without their creature comforts. This whole Tornado Trump tariff crusade could turn around and bite Trump in the butt so hard, he has to flee Washington within 24 months. A third term? I doubt if he will finish this term.

And nobody's even discussing China's mastery of hacking, they could literally cripple the US overnight if that was their end game.

It wouldn’t work. When he’s got something in his head, he doesn’t even listen to his best buddies. Senility, wealth and a hunger for power do not a great mix make.

A lot smarter than you want to think.

China has it's sights on the Artic Silk Road, Putin wants to put a stop to it and Trump wants to help his mate out.

No guesses on who the major loser will be, but we will all suffer in one way or another along the road.

Agreed. It won’t go on though. He’s just angling for a deal. But probably not a good idea to take on the CCP.

An alternative perspective, sure. As in an alternative universe with alternative facts where Trump wins the trade war lol.

Admittedly, very perceptive of you to know that I’m a lefty ie left handed.

Alternative perspectives are useless if they have no foundation in reality.

trump cancelled the tariffs on PRC  electronic goods; what does that tell you?

Of course you dont.

In April of 2024, the US passed a bill authorizing the Pentagon to stock up on strategic minerals including rare earths. Unfortunately, in April of 2024, China renewed restriction on exporting 7 rare earths.  Maybe you think that was a coincidence?

The Pentagon has begun to take steps to recycle rare earths and push for the mining of them. But that takes time. And the reserves are for defense use.

It would be foolish to ignore a relationship between the tariffs, Ukraine and Greenland, a bigger plan in play.

Every one of my posts have been a fact. Starting from my first post that stated you are clueless about the effects of this trade war to the one where Trump is doing a great job to end US hegemony and promote multipolarity.

Did Trump REALLY expect China to blink???  He is completely out of touch with reality.

Trump cannot win against the wily Chinese ,he has already blinked by

allowing Computers ,parts etc into USA , you can bet Xi has not been

on the phone to him , willing to back down ,

You are not well informed. The reprieve for laptops, smartphones etc was just fake news. They will be slapped with more tariffs.
